Staff Product Designer
About LegalZoom
LegalZoom is on a mission to help people navigate the legal system with confidence and clarity. As a leader in online legal services for over 25 years, we combine technology, attorney-led solutions, and expertise to protect the aspirations, lives, and legacies of millions of customers. If you’re ready to contribute to a collaborative, diverse, and distributed group of creative thinkers and problem-solvers, we can’t wait to meet you.
Human-in-the-Loop
We operate with a human-in-the-loop model, where AI enhances—rather than replaces—human judgment. We believe the strongest outcomes for our customers come from thoughtfully integrating human expertise with AI capabilities to improve accuracy, safety, and decision-making.
Where we work
We believe work should work for you. LegalZoom supports a remote-friendly environment that gives employees flexibility and balance. Our Austin, Beaverton, Frisco, Los Angeles Metro, and San Francisco Bay Area offices allow our employees to collaborate with teammates and offer special onsite events, lunches, and more. This hybrid position will work remotely as well as onsite in our Sherman Oaks, Mountain View or Austin office. While this position is remote, we encourage and at times, require in-person collaboration at our offices.
Overview
LegalZoom's product design team builds in code, not just in mockups. As a Staff Product Designer, internally referred to as an AI UX Designer, you solve problems end to end and build the production-ready prototypes and components that prove out your thinking, then hand off directly to engineering.
Seniority on this team
Shows up as leading a domain, a product surface, an emerging AI experience, a growth surface, as a natural extension of doing the work well, not through a separate title or ladder.
What sets this role apart
Build fluency on top of design judgment, taking the strongest direction to a working, production-quality prototype.
Design fundamentals
- Defend a direction with evidence, not instinct, and explore meaningfully different approaches before converging.
- Comfort designing from ambiguity, a problem before it has a spec, a system before it has documentation.
- Fluency building with AI development tools (Claude Code or equivalent) to take a concept to a working, production-quality prototype.
- Front-end implementation fluency, including the judgment to tell when AI-generated code preserves your design intent and when it degrades, and the ability to wire components to real data and APIs rather than static mocks.
- Git and GitHub workflow: branches, pull requests, and code review as a normal part of how you ship.
- Prompt and context scaffolding to keep AI output consistent and minimize drift across a project.
- Read and respond to CI/CD checks, visual regression, accessibility, token audits, before work reaches customers.
- Instrument what you ship so real usage feeds back into the next round of design, not just what shipped but how it performed.
- Recognize gaps in the design system and initiate new patterns: build and document components that integrate with the system's architecture rather than working around it.
- Close gaps in a design system, not just applying what already exists.
- Clear communication and the ability to influence people who don't report to you.
- Strategic mindset: connect the decision in front of you to where the product and the team are headed, not just what's due this sprint.
