About the Role
University of Chicago Medicine, a world-class academic healthcare system, seeks a Staff Nurse for the Adult Emergency Room department. This 55-room department includes a rapid assessment unit, six trauma/resuscitation suites, and specialized rooms for infection isolation, immune-compromised patient care, and psychiatric consultations. The department champions nurse involvement in unit-based councils, quality initiatives, staff mentorship, and compassionate care for a diverse population. This is a 100% onsite position based in the greater Chicagoland area.
Responsibilities
- Utilize appropriate assessment skills to determine patient needs
- Develop a plan of care for patients not requiring Case Manager expertise, or collaborate with Case Manager to develop care plans
- Provide input into development of clinical paths with assigned Case Manager
- Use care plan and/or clinical path in providing patient care
- Delegate appropriately based on patient needs and staff competencies
- Perform patient care according to hospital policy and nursing practice within clinical specialty
- Evaluate care given and adjust plan of care to meet changing patient needs
- Document appropriately in patient care records
- Prepare and administer medication/treatment according to physician's orders
- Work collaboratively with patient care and multidisciplinary team members
- Document or ensure documentation of all patient care from admission to discharge
- Incorporate discharge planning into clinical pathway or plan of care
- Provide cost-effective care through appropriate utilization of time, supplies and personnel
- Evaluate patient care interventions and collaborate with team members to make changes
- Initiate and/or participate in patient care conferences
- Interact consistently with patient and family providing coordination of care for patients not requiring Case Manager expertise
- Promote and utilize appropriate patient care protocols relating to physical, psychosocial and developmental needs of neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients
Required Qualifications
- Graduate of an NLN accredited School of Nursing
- Associate of Science in Nursing or higher
- Current Illinois RN license
- Active BLS Certification
- SANE-AA or SANE-P Certification: must be enrolled within 6 months of employment (18 months for new grad RNs). Obtaining and maintaining SANE certification is a condition of employment
Qualifications & Preferred Experience
- Associate Degree in Nursing required; BSN degree or higher preferred
- Associate Degree Nurses must enroll in a BSN program within 6-9 months of hire and complete their BSN degree within 30 months (100% tuition reimbursement provided)
- ED experience highly preferred
Schedule
- Full-Time, 0.9 FTE
- Days, 7a-7:30p
- Every other weekend required
