About the Role

Under general supervision, assumes 24-hour accountability to plan and provide direct professional nursing care for specified patients throughout the entire episode of service delivery as defined by the unit's patient population. Provides nursing services to patients and families in accordance with the standards of practice of a professional nurse, CCMC policies and procedures, TJC, and State & federal regulations. Reports to Nurse Manager.

Responsibilities

  • Clinical Practice: Demonstrates clinical expertise and uses the nursing process daily to provide safe, appropriate patient care to a defined patient population according to CCMC and unit policies and standards.
  • Population Specific: Demonstrates knowledge of the differences and needs of patients in specific populations from neonate through adolescence and applies them to practice. Exhibits cultural sensitivity in all interactions with patients and families.
  • Unit Leadership: Delegates duties and tasks associated with patient care to clinical staff according to hospital policy and their scope of practice. Contributes to unit leadership by functioning as the Resource Nurse and participating in the professional development of others through preceptor/mentor activities. Supports unit/department work productivity and resource management.
  • Documentation/Communication: Completes all required documentation in a timely manner according to CCMC policies and standards. Effectively communicates necessary information to all members of the healthcare team.
  • Patient/Family Partnership & Education: Partners with child and family in evaluating outcomes. Monitors, trends, and evaluates patient/family responses to treatment. Provides education to patients and families regarding all aspects of care according to CCMC policies and standards. Supports the organization’s patient/family education efforts.
  • CCMC Standards: Demonstrates support for the mission, values, and goals of the organization through behaviors consistent with CCMC Standards.

Requirements

  • Education and/or Experience:
    • ASN required upon hire.
    • BSN preferred upon hire and required within 3 years of hire.
    • Minimum of 2 years pediatric and/or medical/surgical experience preferred.
  • License and/or Certifications:
    • Current State of Connecticut Registered Nurse licensure required and maintained thereafter.
    • American Heart Association or American Red Cross Healthcare Provider CPR/BLS certification required upon hire and maintained thereafter.
    • Nonviolent Crisis Intervention training certification required within 3 months of hire and maintained thereafter.
    • PALS required within 6 months of hire.
  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
    • Knowledge of:
      • Theory, principles, techniques, and practice of professional nursing.
      • State regulations regarding nursing practice.
      • Clinical standards of care, documentation, and patient record policies and standards.
      • Teaching techniques, identification of learning needs, and provision of patient/family education.
      • Developmental and population-specific patient & family assessment techniques and their application to practice.
      • Accreditation and certification requirements and standards.
    • Skills:
      • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with a diverse community.
      • Basic proficiency in personal computers, including networked Windows-based healthcare environments, related software applications, and internet research.
    • Ability to:
      • Work individually or within teams and collaborate with other organizations in the medical and research community.
      • Make clinical and procedural decisions using the nursing process.
      • Maintain confidentiality of information.
      • Delegate appropriately to ancillary staff.
      • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

About The Team

MS7 is a fast-paced medical-surgical floor with 28 beds where our average patient turnaround and length of stay is between 24 hours to 3 days. We specialize in the care of children with complex Neurology, Cardiology, Pulmonary, and Urology conditions, as well as other general medical ailments. Our team is family-oriented, and we pride ourselves on teamwork, discovery, advocacy, communication, and providing compassionate care.

We work closely with a multitude of specialty areas, including both the Neonatal and Pediatric Intensive Care Units. We strive to provide patient- and family-centered care that incorporates family input to ensure a comprehensive plan of care. Our goal is to build strong, trusting relationships with our patients and families. We look forward to welcoming new team members!
