As a Staff Mobile Engineer, you will build product features for our Member App across our mobile stack, shipping reliable, measurable, and valuable mobile capabilities. You will lead projects, mentor engineers, and leverage AI tools while maintaining strong engineering quality to create world-class, customer-facing mobile experiences.

Responsibilities

  • Mobile Product Development
    • Transform hi-fidelity designs and product requirements into accurate, working features.
    • Communicate complex ideas concisely to technical and non-technical team members.
  • Build & Integrate
    • Design and implement features using React Native alongside Native iOS or Android engineering to solve user problems and deliver rich, engaging experiences.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration
    • Partner closely with Backend Engineers, Product Managers, User Experience Designers, and Data Scientists to build systems with user experience forethought.
  • Architecture & Quality
    • Architect reliable, performant, and scalable React Native solutions and build efficient, reusable components.
    • Set the tone for engineering best practices and culture within the team, leading by example.
  • Roadmap Ownership
    • Own technical roadmaps and take responsibility for the architecture and quality of your team’s features.
    • Work across teams to discuss interoperability and solution design, influencing technical direction and driving consensus.
  • Multi-Team Initiatives & Production Excellence
    • Technical Direction: Set the technical direction for products, aligning with Shipt’s strategy and value delivery.
    • Observability & Troubleshooting: Own incidents and recovery for production issues, troubleshooting deeply to root cause. Drive observability patterns and best practices.
    • Security & Process: Adopt a security-first mindset when architecting new features and scrutinize existing ones. Create processes to address systemic issues.
    • Mentorship & Culture: Mentor engineers, cultivate future senior engineers, and model a blameless, inclusive culture.
    • AI-Assisted Engineering: Utilize AI-assisted development workflows to accelerate code generation, testing, and documentation while maintaining high quality.

Requirements

  • 7+ years of experience with React Native, including a strong understanding of the React component lifecycle and performance optimization.
  • Strong experience in testing fundamentals (unit, integration, and e2e).
  • Strong experience with Real User Monitoring (RUM) and asset health/observability tooling (e.g., Datadog).
  • Strong experience with CI/CD tools like Circle CI, Drone, or similar.
  • Experience in Native mobile iOS or Android engineering.
  • Experience using AI coding assistants (e.g., GitHub Copilot, Cursor) to accelerate boilerplate code, unit testing, and documentation.
  • Experience with accessibility best practices for mobile.
  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience.

Nice-to-Haves

  • Experience with the Detox end-to-end testing suite.
  • Experience building APIs in JavaScript using Node.js or similar.
  • Experience working with GraphQL and the Apollo Client.
  • Experience with app distribution (App Store, Play Store, Beta channels, CodePush, etc.).
  • Development experience with an e-commerce application.

Skills & Education

Key skills for this role include Android Operating Systems, Apple iOS, Mobile Products, React.js, and React Native. A Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience is required.

Schedule

Hybrid team members have the following in-office expectations:

  • Birmingham, AL: Typically work in-office at least 2 days per week, with core in-office days on Wednesdays and Thursdays.
  • Minneapolis, MN: Typically work in-office at least 1 day per week on either Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday.
  • San Francisco, CA: Typically work in-office at least 1 day per week between Monday and Thursday.

Certain roles may require full-time in-office presence. Work with your recruiter to learn more about the classification of this role.

Pay

Pay range: $130,000 - $175,000. Individual total compensation will vary based on qualifications, skill level, competencies, and work location.
