Staff ML Performance Engineer (Training Efficiency)
About the role
The role is for a Staff ML Performance Engineer to join the Training Tech team at Wayve. The ideal candidate will optimize large scale ML jobs to enable scaling models to the next order of magnitude.
Responsibilities
- Profile ML workloads to identify bottlenecks
- Create efficiency improvements such as parallelism and model compilation
- Implement observability tools to track MFU, throughput, latency
- Develop benchmarking tools to measure efficiency gains
- Collaborate with Research teams to integrate performance optimizations
Requirements
- 10+ years of industry experience in performance engineering
- Experience optimizing large scale jobs on GPU compute clusters
- Experience working in platform teams and with research teams
- Ability to write high-quality, well-structured, and tested Python code
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Machine Learning, Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical discipline
Desirable
- Experience with concurrent, parallel, and distributed computing
- Experience using NVIDIA NSight Systems or other system profilers
- Experience implementing GPU kernels (CUDA, Triton, etc.)
- Knowledge of computing fundamentals

This role is a full-time position based in Sunnyvale, CA (hybrid). The reasonably estimated salary range for this role is $336,400 to $359,000, plus a competitive equity package. Actual compensation is based on the candidate's skills, qualifications, and experience.

Qualifications
- BS or MS in Machine Learning, Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical discipline or equivalent experience
Skills
- Experience optimizing large scale jobs on GPU compute clusters
- Experience in working in platform teams and working with research teams
- Ability to write high quality, well-structured and tested Python code
- Experience in writing, reporting, and tracking performance benchmarks in an open and accessible way
- Experience using NVIDIA NSight Systems or other system profilers
- Experience implementing GPU kernels (CUDA, Triton, etc.)
- Knowledge of computing fundamentals - what makes code fast, secure and reliable
