Staff Mechanical Engineer
About the Role
This role will assume leadership of Mechanical Engineering activities on projects and will serve as the group expert for Mechanical Engineering design and sourcing. A successful candidate must also effectively communicate in cross functional teams that span all engineering disciplines, marketing, sales, and production.
What You Will Do
- Independently design and develop the mechanical portions of electronic instruments, and integrate solutions with the electrical and optical design
- Model physical systems for heating/cooling, fluid flow, aerosol movement, and optics properties, using finite-element analysis software and related technologies
- Design and support injection molded designs, machined parts design, and rapid prototyping techniques, especially 3D printing
- Understand design, performance, and cost tradeoffs and make recommendations for optimization
- Support rapid cycles of design/test/model/experiment/analyze that are complex in nature
- Evaluate potential solutions to engineering problems for feasibility, manufacturability, and cost effectiveness
- Accurately estimate task duration and resource requirements to meet project commitments
- Design parts in Creo and SolidWorks
- Support product design, by testing sub-systems and products in a lab (functional testing, drop test, vibration test, etc.)
- Conduct experiments and system-level measurements for gases and aerosols, and verify and validate such systems
- May serve as a technical lead on research and development projects and provide guidance to other engineers or technicians
- Responsible for providing strong documentation and specifications on project work
