Staff Mechanical Engineer
About the role
As a full-time member of the Product Design team, you will be a leader responsible for the design, testing, performance, documentation, and production of wireless security camera products targeted to retail and small business markets. These products are high-volume, with all manufacturing done in Asia. You will manage the design and tooling of plastic and metal enclosures for wireless security cameras intended for use in homes and small to medium offices, from concept to production. Additional tasks may include performing engineering analysis (thermal, stress, and tolerance analysis), design documentation, and ODM management.

Responsibilities
- Product design, evaluation, testing, performance, and documentation of products.
- Work closely with the Product Design team, Operations, Product Marketing, Industrial Design, and ODM partners to design new products or customize existing ones.
- Take a leadership role to ensure project goals of performance, cost, and schedule are met.
- Work closely with 2nd and 3rd tier suppliers.
- Manage outside consultants and fabrication vendors.
- Some international travel is required (approximately 10-15%).
Requirements
- Minimum education level of BSME from an accredited university.
- Strong mechanical engineering fundamentals.
- Ability to lead programs and drive issues to closure.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to present and explain mechanical design concepts to a diverse audience of stakeholders.
- Minimum 8+ years of experience in Product Design and/or mechanical engineering in high-end consumer electronics such as smart devices, IoT, connected home, or a similar consumer-oriented field, or 5+ years of experience plus a Master’s degree.
Skills
- Deep experience in consumer electronics/product design.
- Proven history working closely with ambitious Industrial Design, functionality, and ecosystems.
- Extensive 3D CAD experience, preferably with Creo, SolidWorks, and other CAD tools considered. Experience including complex surfacing, and recent experience within the last 5 years.
- Experience designing camera or camera-related products.
- Superior expertise in plastic injection mold part design.
- Experience designing outdoor, weatherproof enclosures.
- Understanding of die casting, adhesives, stamping, machining, and rapid prototypes.
- Understanding of tolerance analysis.
- Experience with progressive-die sheet metal part design.
- Extensive design experience with high-volume (over 1 million/year), low-cost products.
- Effective leadership, organization, and project management skills.
- Proven ability and willingness to take ownership of projects; ability to get the job done with minimal supervision.
- Experience in successfully leading projects through to pilot, mass production, and beyond.
- Proven ability to track and resolve issues.
- Self-starter that works well on a team.
- Sensitivity to design aesthetics.
- Fluency in Mandarin is a plus.
Pay
The pay range for this position is between $140,000 – $170,000 per year. Base pay offered may vary depending on multiple factors, including location, role, job-related knowledge, skills, relevant education, and experience. The total compensation package may also include other elements, such as bonus, equity, and benefits.
