Staff Machine Learning Engineer - AI Cloud
Overview
Ripping provides a unified platform for businesses to manage HR, IT, and Finance operations. It consolidates various workforce systems such as payroll, expenses, benefits, and IT resources into a single system.
Responsibilities
- Manage and automate the entire employee lifecycle, including onboarding, payroll setup, corporate card management, computer allocation, benefits enrollment, and integration with third-party applications like Slack and Microsoft 365.
- Design and implement novel machine learning architectures tailored to Rippling's enterprise domain, focusing on areas like fine-tuned language models, retrieval augmented generation, reward models, and multi-agent orchestration.
- Develop robust evaluation and experimentation infrastructure, including offline benchmarks, A/B testing, and continuous monitoring of model quality.
- Create training pipelines and data flywheels that leverage Rippling's structured data graph to support model development and improvement.
- Lead research-to-production efforts, identifying where advanced techniques like reinforcement learning with human feedback (RLHF), distillation, structured decoding, and tool-use training can yield significant improvements.
- Design and implement self-improving systems using feedback loops, active learning, and automated retraining pipelines.
- Collaborate closely with Product and Platform teams to ensure alignment and successful implementation of ML initiatives.
- Mentor engineers across the organization on best practices in machine learning.
- Stay updated with the latest advancements in machine learning research and apply them to production systems.
Requirements
- 8+ years of software engineering experience with 5+ years focused on machine learning, shipping ML systems to production at scale.
- Deep expertise in modern machine learning, including LLMs, transformer architectures, fine-tuning, RLHF, and RAG.
- Strong fundamentals in classical machine learning and statistics.
- Hands-on proficiency with ML frameworks (PyTorch, JAX) and production ML infrastructure.
- Experience building evaluation systems for generative AI.
- Proven ability to lead complex, cross-functional technical initiatives.
- Clear, precise communication to diverse audiences.
- Comfort with ambiguity and high velocity.
Qualifications
- Publishations in top ML venues (NeurIPS, ICML, ACL, EMNLP) are a plus.
- Experience with enterprise data or knowledge graphs is a plus.

The pay range for this role is:
- 198,000 - 330,000 USD per year (US San Francisco Bay Area)
- 198,000 - 330,000 USD per year (US Tier 1)
