Staff General Counsel
About the role
We are hiring a Staff General Counsel to serve as Frame's first in-house legal hire. You will own the legal function across commercial agreements, banking and payment network relationships, employment matters, corporate governance, and regulatory affairs. This is a build role. You will establish how Frame manages legal risk, and you will be a business partner, not a gatekeeper.
About Frame
Frame is a compliance infrastructure company powering payments for complex, highly regulated industries. We enable businesses to move money with confidence by embedding compliance and payments into a single, intelligent platform. Our ambition is to become the infrastructure layer that regulated businesses rely on to operate, scale, and access services globally. We're headquartered in Los Angeles with a globally distributed team.
Responsibilities
- Own commercial contracts including merchant agreements, partner contracts, vendor relationships, and NDAs
- Negotiate and maintain banking and card network agreements that underpin Frame's business
- Manage corporate governance including board matters, equity, cap table, and entity structure
- Ensure employment law compliance across Frame's jurisdictions
- Drive regulatory strategy in coordination with the CCO, understanding how legal and compliance intersect
- Build the legal infrastructure including outside counsel relationships, contract management systems, and internal policies
Requirements
- 7+ years of legal experience, with significant time in fintech, payments, or financial services
- JD and active bar membership
- Experience negotiating and structuring commercial agreements in a financial services context
- Working knowledge of payments regulation, card network rules, and banking partner dynamics
- The judgment to say yes to the right things quickly, and no to the wrong things clearly
- Comfort operating as a generalist. You don't need a team of specialists under you to get things done
Qualifications
- You bring prior in-house experience at a payment facilitator, processor, or regulated fintech
- You've handled a fundraise, M&A process, or significant regulatory matter independently
- You have experience with high-compliance merchant verticals like gaming, gambling, telehealth, or crypto, or a prior BigLaw background with a transition to in-house
- You are someone who treats legal as a function that moves the business forward, not one that slows it down
- You know the difference between a real risk and a theoretical one, and you make calls quickly when the situation warrants it
- You build infrastructure that scales rather than creating bottlenecks that don't
Benefits
- Unlimited PTO with trust to manage your own time
- A wellness budget covering dental, vision, and a free Equinox membership, plus team-led running and spin groups
- Daily lunch and a fully stocked snack kitchen in our Los Angeles office
- Apple hardware, Frame branded merch, regular company off-sites, and a relocation package if you're not already local
