Staff Firmware Engineer
Enphase Energy is a global energy technology company and a leading provider of solar, battery, and electric vehicle charging products. Founded in 2006, its micro‑inverter technology has shipped more than 80 million products across 160 countries, enabling users to make, use, save, and sell their own power.
About the Role
The Modeling and Controls team, part of the Office of the CTO, defines prototypes and supports next‑generation control solutions for Enphase inverter products. The team integrates power‑electronics, controls, and firmware engineers and works closely with multi‑disciplinary groups across the organization. As a Staff Firmware Engineer you will develop, integrate, and validate the inverter control firmware at the core of the Solid‑State Transformer (SST) platform, which is targeted for data‑center power infrastructure.
Responsibilities
- Design and implement firmware, primarily in C and C++, for real‑time operation and control.
- Validate firmware through software simulations, hardware‑in‑the‑loop testing, and prototype bench testing to meet functionality and performance requirements.
- Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines in Bitbucket Pipelines, including automated builds, static analysis, unit testing, and artifact generation.
- Support power‑electronics and controls engineers during hardware bring‑up by integrating, debugging, and tuning embedded firmware on inverter prototypes.
- Optimize product solutions with firmware/hardware control co‑design.
- Collaborate with cross‑functional teams to define firmware requirements, interfaces, and integration strategies.
- Mentor junior staff.
Qualifications
- BS/MS/PhD in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a closely related discipline.
- BS + 8+ years, MS + 6+ years, or PhD + 3+ years of experience in a non‑academic embedded software or firmware engineering role.
Required Skills
- Expert‑level proficiency in C and C++, including memory management, linker scripts, bootloader development, and secure‑boot concepts.
- Strong debugging and systems analysis skills (stack overflows, memory corruption, hard faults, CPU utilization, task‑priority tuning).
- Experience with bare‑metal and real‑time operating systems, multithreaded programming, and multi‑core firmware development.
- Familiarity with ARM Cortex‑M4/M7 architectures.
- Knowledge of microcontroller peripherals such as ADC, GPIO, PWM, SPI, and CAN.
- Understanding of digital signal processing concepts and ability to implement them in firmware.
- Experience testing and debugging code and hardware using J‑Link debug probes (SWD), oscilloscopes, and protocol analyzers.
- Proficiency with embedded toolchains and build systems (GCC, GNU Make, CMake, Python‑based scripts).
- Experience with containerized build environments using Docker.
- Proficiency with Git version control.
- Ability to take ownership of development tasks and drive them to high‑quality completion.
- Experience with AI‑assisted development tools and workflows (e.g., Devin, Copilot, or similar).
Desired Skills
- Zephyr RTOS development experience.
- Familiarity with control loops and PID controllers.
- Desktop and embedded Linux experience.
- Familiarity with AC grid simulators and programmable loads.
