About the role

Northrop Grumman Mission Systems Sector is seeking a Staff Industrial Engineer to join our team of qualified, diverse individuals within our Sector Facilities Optimization organization. This subject-matter expert role is responsible for shaping how our manufacturing and infrastructure footprint supports current and future business needs. The Staff Industrial Engineer serves as a technical leader and trusted advisor, developing data-driven, scenario-based recommendations that directly inform the Facility Governance Model and support the sector Manufacturing and Infrastructure strategy.

This individual will translate demand signals (new programs, technology insertion, rate changes, consolidation, and workforce shifts) into optimized layouts, capacity plans, and facility roadmaps that maximize space utilization, cost efficiency, and flexibility. The role requires strong technical depth in industrial engineering and space planning, combined with the ability to influence across organizational boundaries and drive consistent use of the Facility Governance Model as the single, authoritative path for facility-related decisions.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a sector-level industrial engineering and space planning subject-matter expert, developing facility recommendations, capacity models, space utilization studies, production layouts, and analytics that inform the Facility Governance Model and conform to the sector Manufacturing and Infrastructure strategy.
  • Develop and maintain standard tools, models, and documentation for facility roadmaps, historical databases, and standard work supporting industrial engineering and space planning.
  • Build and maintain models for capacity, space utilization, equipment loading, and operational metrics that inform facility options, capital planning, and execution decisions.
  • Use historical actuals, capacity and throughput data, space utilization trends, manpower data, and schedule assumptions to develop scenario-based layouts, facility roadmaps, and capital investment recommendations in support of governance reviews and leadership decisions.
  • Partner with Manufacturing, Operations, Facilities/Real Estate, Security, CIDO, Engineering, Supply Chain, Program Management, Finance, and other stakeholders to deliver credible, executable, and compliant facility options and recommendations aligned to sector strategy.
  • Apply industrial engineering methods and tools (e.g., capacity studies, value stream mapping, facility layout & simulation) to improve production flow, space utilization, and overall operational efficiency.
  • Prepare clear options, trade-offs, and recommendations that balance near-term operational needs with long-term strategic objectives, and present these to leadership and governance teams.
  • Develop frameworks, templates, and analytics to standardize how programs assess capacity, space, and capital needs, and ensure consistent application across sites and business areas.
  • Support the application and continuous improvement of the Facility Governance Model as the authoritative decision path for facility-related requests, changes, and investments.
  • Provide technical mentorship and guidance to engineering, operations, and planning teams on best practices in layout optimization, capacity planning, and facility analytics (without direct people-management responsibility).

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Systems Engineering, Operations Research, or a related STEM field with 12 or more years of relevant experience; Master’s degree with 10 or more years of relevant experience; or PhD with 8 or more years of relevant experience.
  • Demonstrated experience with facility layout, capacity planning, space utilization, and production flow optimization.
  • Experience with industrial engineering methods and tools (e.g., capacity studies, value stream mapping, facility layout & simulation).
  • Experience using CAD and/or space planning tools, along with strong data analysis skills (e.g., Excel, BI/analytics tools) to develop and present recommendations.
  • Proven ability to partner and influence across functions such as Manufacturing, Operations, Facilities/Real Estate, Engineering, Supply Chain, Program Management, and Finance.
  • Experience preparing and presenting technical and business cases to leadership.
  • U.S. citizenship with ability to obtain a Secret clearance with SAP access.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in aerospace/defense or other highly regulated, complex manufacturing environments.
  • Experience supporting complex facility or manufacturing initiatives, such as new program stand-ups, rate changes, consolidations, or major layout/facility changes.
  • Demonstrated experience implementing or operating within formal facility or capital governance models.
  • Experience with advanced modeling and simulation tools for capacity, flow, and layout optimization (e.g., digital factory tools).
  • Experience developing and deploying standard tools, templates, and analytics platforms for industrial engineering and space planning at scale.
  • Proven track record of influencing senior leadership decisions through data-driven business cases and scenario-based recommendations.
  • Experience developing clear, comprehensive statements of work (SOWs) that enable effective supplier execution and maintain accountability to performance, schedule, and cost.
  • Active Top Secret security clearance.
