About the Role

We are seeking a Staff Environmental Scientist 1, Stormwater to join our growing team in a technical support role. This position offers a recent graduate the opportunity to work on stormwater quality management and environmental compliance projects, primarily in Ventura/Los Angeles Counties. The role involves field work, data analysis, and reporting, with a focus on stormwater sampling, compliance inspections, and coordination with project stakeholders.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct field investigations and assessments of soil, groundwater, surface water, etc., using approved industry standard procedures.
  • Perform basic construction observation, including quality control documentation and field testing tasks.
  • Conduct or oversee remedial system O&M and field pilot study demonstrations.
  • Prepare and maintain accurate documentation of field activities and data evaluation.
  • Apply academic training and computer software to perform calculations and evaluate information.
  • Support project environmental data reduction, summarization, and reporting.
  • Assist with feasibility studies, remedial design, cost estimating, and permitting tasks.
  • Support AutoCAD, Civil 3D, and GIS tasks.
  • Draft technical sections of project communications and reports.
  • Assist with developing technical scopes of work and cost estimates for proposals.
  • Ensure compliance with health and safety protocols.
  • Support stormwater quality management, including sampling, inspections, and field monitoring.
  • Coordinate field activities with project team members, contractors, and laboratories.
  • Assist with permit reviews and evaluation of stormwater requirements.
  • Support stormwater data validation, analysis, and preparation of compliance reports.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Water Resources Engineering, Geology, Civil Engineering, or related field.
  • 0 to 2 years of related field experience.
  • Proficient technical writing, verbal communication, reasoning, and time management skills.
  • Ability to work independently or with minimal direction.
  • Desire to learn and grow professionally, with a positive attitude and strong work ethic.
  • Familiarity with environmental analytical testing and data reduction techniques.
  • Ability to meet physical requirements: lift 50 lbs, traverse unstable sites, work outdoors in various weather conditions, and perform moderate physical activity.
  • Ability to travel and work overnight when required.
  • Availability for early-morning starts and on-call response during the stormwater season (October through April), including weekends and holidays.
  • Ability to report to the primary project site in Los Angeles/Ventura County within one hour.
  • Ability to pass background screenings and obtain site access badges.
  • Reliable transportation or ability to rent a vehicle for site access.

Qualifications

  • Preferred: Master’s degree in Environmental Science, Water Resources Engineering, or related field.
  • Preferred: Familiarity with AutoCAD, Civil 3D, and GIS.
  • Preferred: OSHA 40-Hour HAZWOPER training.
  • Preferred: Interest in obtaining stormwater certifications (CISEC, CPESC, CPSWQ, CESSWI).
  • Preferred: Experience with Industrial NPDES, MS4 programs, or California stormwater regulations.
  • Preferred: Experience with soil, groundwater, air, or stormwater sampling and reporting methods.

Pay

The salary range for this position in Costa Mesa, CA, and Los Angeles, CA, is $75,000 - $85,000 annually. Actual compensation will be based on education, experience, skills, and market conditions.
