About the role
The Grade 1 Staff Engineer - Trenchless, Tunneling, and Geotech position is an entry-level role designed to provide hands-on experience in civil, geotechnical, geological, and tunnel/trenchless design. It aims to develop fundamental skills in field and office tasks, enhance professional communication and collaboration, and implement tasks under significant mentorship.
Responsibilities
- Perform and document geotechnical investigations including civil geotechnical drilling, well construction, field mapping, and communicating with subcontractors.
- Create design and construction drawings using AutoCAD and other graphic software.
- Record project-related activities by documenting observed field and office activities using electronic and written means.
- Perform geotechnical, tunnel, and trenchless design calculations using Mathcad, Excel, and geo-oriented software.
- Support project engineers and project managers with other tasks.
Requirements
- Qualified to become exam-based Engineer-in-Training (EIT).
- Microsoft Office Suite, PDF printing and editing, AutoCAD LTE.
- Undergraduate degree in Engineering (civil, geotechnical, or structural) or related field.
- Understand material sciences (steel and concrete), applied mathematics, fluid dynamics, geologic hazards, soils and bedrock identification, soil and rock mechanics, geology, and underground construction.
- Strong attention to detail, excellent collaboration skills, organizational tactics, analytical, judgment, and problem-solving capabilities.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Qualifications
- Pass the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) examination.
- Reliable transportation to access job sites and a valid driver’s license in good standing.
Skills
- Proficiency in AutoCAD LTE.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.
- Ability to perform geotechnical, tunnel, and trenchless design calculations.
- Good understanding of underground construction and design for civil structures.
- Basic knowledge of material sciences, fluid dynamics, geologic hazards, soils and bedrock identification, soil and rock mechanics, and geology.

Pay
$70,000.00 – $85,000.00/year
