About the role

This fully onsite role, based in Fort Washington, Pennsylvania, reports to the Sr Manager of Engineering & Automation. The Staff Engineer, Packaging Equipment, is responsible for technical support, including specification, development, implementation, and assurance of a qualified state for packaging equipment. You will align packaging equipment requirements with the site’s needs, ensuring customer service, quality, and compliance goals. The role involves managing capital plans, equipment asset management, and reliability, as well as leading cross-functional teams to deliver key projects.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and execute multiple and/or major equipment and validation projects concerned with life cycle management initiatives, developing risk mitigation strategies to deliver project commitments.
  • Understand and improve assigned processes and various equipment technologies across multiple locations simultaneously, benchmarking sites to provide best-in-class processes for the company.
  • Plan and execute equipment and validation strategies aligned with consumer asset management strategies, identifying and eliminating waste through technical solutions.
  • Lead equipment installation, qualification, validation, and start-up for assigned projects, communicating potential issues and providing clear direction to site teams.
  • Provide engineering solutions, technical advice, and assistance to Operations, Packaging, and other departments as required.
  • Develop and execute plans to maintain high levels of Operational Equipment Efficiency (OEE), driving value through multi-site projects that improve compliance, quality, efficiency, and cost.
  • Support and/or lead the development and assessment of packaging design requirements, scope of change, equipment solution proposals, risk assessments, test plans, and results analysis.
  • Lead, develop, write, and gain cross-functional alignment of required documentation for equipment systems qualifications and/or validations.
  • Support and/or lead line trials, engineering studies, equipment qualification, and process performance qualification.
  • Ensure all trainings, including those of direct reports, are current and completed prior to executing specific work activities.
  • Support and/or lead the development, execution, and review of change controls for equipment and validation-related changes.
  • Provide technical support and/or lead equipment/process troubleshooting, using tools like Kepner Tregoe and DMAIC to identify root causes and write/approve reports (e.g., technical memos, Non-Conformance (NC), CAPAs).
  • Prepare or approve Equipment Periodic Reviews, write or approve SOPs, and provide technical advice on policies and procedures.
  • Manage investigations, CAPAs, and Annual Product Review (APR) data collection, analysis, and review/approval.
  • Review and approve Commissioning and Qualification documentation, Computer System Validation documentation, and Package Validation documentation.
  • Manage projects independently from concept to post-implementation for complex projects, demonstrating problem-solving methodology.
  • Provide technical direction to external resources (e.g., designers, suppliers, contractors, consultants).
  • Serve as a technical subject matter expert for changes, improvements, continuous improvement projects (CIPs), and sustainability initiatives.
  • Lead technical teams or act as the primary technical lead on cross-functional teams, coordinating project activities and resources.
  • Provide direction and mentorship to Co-ops and entry-level engineers.
  • Influence people, projects, and tasks of various complexities, solving difficult technical issues with substantial impact on product quality and business outcomes.
  • Maintain proficiency in cGMPs, SOPs, testing procedures, and data analysis.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree (or equivalent) in Engineering (Chemical, Mechanical, Electrical, or related discipline) required; advanced degree preferred.
  • 6+ years of experience in engineering, packaging, technical, and/or operations roles, preferably in a pharmaceutical or consumer products company.
  • Knowledge of cGMPs and Good Documentation Practices; experience in an FDA/cGMP compliance environment preferred.
  • Bilingual (English and Spanish) with excellent verbal, writing, and technical writing skills.
  • In-depth understanding of current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP) and FDA regulations, including quality assurance methodologies, risk management, and compliance auditing.
  • Strong knowledge of manufacturing processes, including packaging equipment, utilities, and automation systems.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) for reporting, analysis, and presentations.
  • Experience in equipment installation, troubleshooting, commissioning, qualification, and validation.
  • Basic knowledge of client/server architecture, network connectivity, and IT infrastructure in regulated environments.
  • Effective project management and time management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks under pressure.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with technical and non-technical personnel, lead cross-functional teams, and drive continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Capable of making sound decisions based on data and regulatory requirements, working independently with minimal supervision in fast-paced environments.

Qualifications

  • Six Sigma Green Belt/Black Belt certification preferred.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred.
  • Project Management certification preferred.
  • Demonstrated leadership competencies aligned with company values and behaviors, with the ability to work effectively as a team player.

Pay

Annual base salary for new hires in this position ranges from $110,500 to $156,000, taking into account work location, candidate’s skills, experience, and education level, among other factors.
