About the role

G2 Consulting Group is seeking a full-time staff engineer to join our geotechnical solar team in the Ann Arbor office. Staff engineers perform field testing, laboratory testing, and engineering-report preparation related to the development of industrial-scale solar energy projects under the supervision of a project engineer or project manager.

Most work will be performed outdoors at sites across the country, requiring extensive travel—generally 1 to 2 weeks at a time. Project frequency varies, but multiple projects may occur consecutively.

Responsibilities

  • Represent G2 in a professional manner.
  • Complete and submit daily field test reports.
  • Perform routine tasks, tests, and computations.
  • Work on multiple projects within budgets and deadlines.
  • Field duties: soil boring logging, sample collection, pile load testing, and electrical resistivity testing.
  • Laboratory duties: determination of California Bearing Ratio (CBR), soil thermal resistivity, unconfined compressive strength, dry density, Atterberg limits, organic content, particle-size distribution, and soil classification.
  • Report preparation: analyze and interpret field and laboratory test data, perform complex engineering calculations, and develop recommendations for foundation and roadway design.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering or a related field.
  • Valid driver’s license, vehicle insurance, and an excellent driving record.
  • Ability to lift up to 99 lbs (e.g., 11-foot W6x9 steel piles) independently and multiple times daily.
  • Ability to use hand power tools, saws, drills, and hydraulic equipment.
  • Willingness to work overtime, weekends, and travel (drive or fly) out of town with long overnight stays.
  • Willingness to work outside in hot and cold weather conditions.
  • Willingness to independently operate heavy-duty construction equipment (e.g., 30k excavator).
  • Willingness to work in difficult terrain, active agricultural fields, cattle pastures, and wooded areas.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Engineer in Training (EIT) certification.
  • Three months to four years of demonstrated experience in construction engineering.
  • Strong Microsoft Windows and Office skills.
  • Strong communication (verbal and written) skills.
  • Strong prioritization, coordination, and matrix management skills; self-directed and self-motivated.
  • Strong administrative and time management skills with keen attention to detail.
  • Ability to read and understand testing specifications.
