Staff Engineer, Backend, Revenue

About the role

Zapier is seeking a Staff Engineer to lead the technical vision and long-term architecture for Revenue Zone. This role involves defining pricing primitives, service boundaries, and data models to enable quick and accurate pricing and packaging changes.

Responsibilities

• Operate as part of the zone’s leadership team, partnering with Engineering, Product, and Design to shape strategy and roadmap decisions.
• Translate business context into technical direction and ensure engineering tradeoffs are clearly understood at the business level.
• Shape the long-term platform vision by defining and evolving the architectural direction of the Revenue Zone, balancing near-term delivery with long-term durability, extensibility, and operational excellence.
• Drive the strategic evolution of our monetization platform, decoupling billing from account systems, clarifying system boundaries, and consolidating pricing infrastructure.
• Build flexible, configurable foundations that enable fast Pricing and Packaging experimentation and seamless launch moments across the customer lifecycle, while supporting clean, reliable data for Finance and Pricing & Packaging.
• Own and strengthen revenue-critical systems, ensuring they are resilient, observable, and correct. Raise the bar on proactive detection, safe rollback mechanisms, and revenue accuracy.
• Partner deeply across Zapier teams to drive ARR growth and craft seamless, intuitive, and lovable monetization journeys for self-serve, enterprise, and ecosystem customers. Work with Support and Operations to ensure robust admin tooling and exceptional customer experiences.
• Identify performance bottlenecks and deliver optimizations that show up in the metrics, such as reduced latency, improved reliability, stronger customer experiences, and improved conversion and retention.
• Mentor engineers and raise the technical bar by sharing patterns and tooling, conducting thoughtful code reviews, and growing engineering capability across the zone.
• Champion documentation and developer experience by ensuring our systems are well-documented and easy to adopt, reducing friction and accelerating development across the organization.

Requirements

You must have proven engineering impact, strong domain knowledge in billing systems, subscription management, payment processing, or financial platforms, API, platform, and performance expertise, outcome-driven and customer-focused mindset, cross-team leadership and proactive ownership, and comfort with complexity.

Qualifications

• Proven engineering impact: You've driven outcomes in complex, production systems at scale — shipping projects that delivered measurable improvements in environments where requirements shifted under you.
• Billing/payments/monetization domain experience: You bring strong domain knowledge in billing systems, subscription management, payment processing, or financial platforms.
• API, platform, and performance expertise: You've designed and built APIs that serve multiple consumers — internal teams, external partners, and user-facing products — and you know how to evolve systems without breaking existing integrations.
• Outcome-driven and customer-focused: You care deeply about the problems our customers are trying to solve and define success by the results they achieve — not the elegance of the technical solution.
• Cross-team leadership and proactive ownership: You've led technical initiatives that span multiple teams and operate with end-to-end ownership.
• Comfort with complexity: You're at home in large, mature codebases — you know how to navigate a monolith, find the right leverage points, and make meaningful progress without waiting for a clean slate.

Skills

• AI fluency: You use AI coding tools as a regular part of your workflow and have a point of view on where they accelerate delivery and where human judgment is non-negotiable.

Pay

The salary range for this role is $150,000 - $200,000 annually, depending on experience and qualifications.

Schedule

This role is remote and flexible, allowing you to work from anywhere in the Americas - North, Central and South America, EMEA, and APAC.
