About the role

Principal Production Quality Engineer is a senior technical leader responsible for ensuring product integrity, compliance, and robust manufacturing performance within an AS9100-certified aerospace production environment. Recognized as a subject-matter expert in Production Quality Engineering, this role independently leads complex quality initiatives, manages moderately sized projects, and drives improvements that significantly impact the performance of the value stream. Provides expert input to new products, processes, and operational plans, influences policies and procedures across functional boundaries, and strengthens RTX Zero Defects and quality excellence objectives.

Responsibilities

• Serve as the senior quality focal for assigned production value streams, ensuring alignment with AS9100, RTX Quality Management System (QMS), customer-specific requirements, and regulatory compliance.
• Lead investigations for customer-returned product, production escapes, and systemic issues; drive advanced Root Cause Corrective Action (RCCA) aligned with AS13000 and validate corrective actions through site-wide read-across.
• Own Delivered Quality improvement strategies, leveraging data analysis and cross-functional influence to reduce defects and support RTX Zero Defects initiatives.
• Oversee Nonconforming Material Review (including Material Review Board (MRB)-level decision-making where applicable), focusing on risk-based dispositions, Cost of Non-Conformance (CONC) reduction, and process robustness.
• Provide quality oversight in Change Review Board (CRB) activities, evaluating design and process changes and ensuring configuration control and verification/validation rigor.
• Manage moderately sized quality projects or processes with measurable impact on discipline results, including production readiness, process capability improvements, inspection strategy development, and quality system enhancements.
• Contribute to the development of operational plans, budgets, quality goals, and discipline strategies by providing expert input that aligns quality engineering with business needs.
• Lead quality support for New Product Introduction (NPI), including Production Part Approval Process (PPAP), Early Transition to Quality Production (ETQP), AS9102 First Article Inspection (FAI), process validation, and production transfer readiness.
• Influence cross-functional teams—Operations, Engineering, Supply Chain, Customer Quality—on adoption of quality practices, process standards, and defect-prevention strategies.
• Coach, mentor, delegate, and review work of lower-level professionals, strengthening team capability and ensuring consistent deployment of quality methods.
• Communicate effectively with internal teams and external stakeholders including customers, vendors, auditors, and partners to ensure clear understanding of quality status, risks, and requirements.
• Drive day-to-day quality engineering objectives with significant impact on production performance and customer satisfaction.
• Provide measurable input to and help shape operational plans, new processes, quality standards, and discipline goals.
• Solve undefined, complex, multi-variable technical problems through detailed information gathering, investigation, prior experience, and structured analysis.
• Implement moderate to significant improvements to processes, production systems, inspection methods, and quality mechanisms that enhance work area performance.
• Influence decisions and policies at an operational level—both within Quality and across Operations, Engineering, and Supply Chain.
• Integrate RTX project and program knowledge to ensure quality requirements are met throughout production lifecycle.

Requirements

• Typically requires a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) and a minimum of 8 years of prior relevant experience unless prohibited by local laws/regulations.
• An Advanced Degree in a related field and minimum 5 years of experience may be considered.

Qualifications

• Aerospace or defense manufacturing experience
• Advanced Analytical Problem Solving: Expert in 8D, root cause analysis, Apollo, AS13000 methods, and statistical tools. Adept at resolving difficult, undefined problems impacting multiple departments.
• Advanced Knowledge in Aerospace NPI/NPD: including an understanding of APQP/Stride processes and mastery of quality tools (PFMEA, Control Plans, MSA, Process Flow, Process Capability, Preventive Maintenance, machine qualification).
• AS9100 QMS Expertise: Knowledge of AS9100 requirements, internal/external audits, documentation compliance, and customer-specific standards; capable of leading audit readiness and closure of complex findings.
• Continuous Improvement Leadership: Expert application of RTX CORE/Lean tools (Value Stream Mapping, TPM, 5S, Setup Reduction, Mistake Proofing) to improve process capability and eliminate waste.
• Cost of Quality Leadership: Strong ability to analyze Cost of Non-Conformance, identify improvement opportunities, and lead site-level COQ reduction initiatives.
• Cross-Functional Influence: Skilled at influencing policies, practices, procedures, and operational decisions across multiple functional groups and with external partners.
• Project Management Knowledge: Ability to manage moderately sized quality projects, drive cross-functional activity, and ensure project outcomes tie to key operational goals.

Pay

The salary range for this role is $107,500 - $204,500 USD. The salary range provided is a good faith estimate representative of all experience levels. RTX considers several factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to, the role, function and associated responsibilities, a candidate’s work experience, location, education/training, and key skills.
