We are seeking a Staff Substation Engineer to work under the supervision of a licensed professional engineer, developing design deliverables for new and modified high-voltage (13kV to 765kV) electrical power substation projects.

About the role

The Staff Substation Engineer will collaborate with the project team throughout the design and construction process, adapting engineering plans to meet budget constraints, design factors, or client needs. This role supports substation projects from the conceptual phase through completion.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and develop substation design packages, including physical arrangement above and below grade, protective relaying and control, electrical studies (e.g., grounding and lightning analysis), and lighting and security.
  • Develop substation calculations, such as insulation, AC station service, DC systems and battery sizing, voltage drop, cable sizing, and conduit fill.
  • Prepare design sketches, cost estimates, equipment specifications, bill of materials, and other required deliverables.
  • Apply intermediate knowledge of IEEE, NESC, and other industry and utility standards, guides, specifications, and procedures.
  • Support field inspections for substation facilities on public and private utility systems.
  • Research and compile project-related data as required by project managers.
  • Support client presentations, reports, and visualizations to demonstrate technical results and project status.
  • Identify, communicate, and support the resolution of issues on projects as needed.
  • Work with the project manager to support project schedules and meet deadlines.
  • Collaborate with the project team to ensure deliverables and services meet client satisfaction and follow internal QA/QC guidelines.
  • Perform design quality reviews.
  • Meet and correspond with clients or outside personnel to develop relationships with key client points of contact.
  • Support the preparation of proposals and client presentations during the proposal process.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related degree from an ABET-accredited program and 3 years of substation engineering experience (consulting preferred), or
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering Technology, or a related degree from an ABET-accredited program and successful completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam and 3 years of substation engineering experience (consulting preferred).
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Proficient computer skills (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite).
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated critical thinking and leadership skills.
  • Desire to work in a collaborative team environment.
  • Capability to apply diversified knowledge of engineering principles and practices to broad areas of assignments.
  • Ability to devise new approaches to problems encountered.
  • Engineers in Training (EIT) Certification preferred.

Pay

$105,000.00–$175,000.00 yearly. The expected compensation range is based on individual education, qualifications, prior work experience, and work location. The total annual compensation package includes a base salary and eligibility to participate in a discretionary year-end incentive bonus program.

Schedule

Full-time. Travel required: up to 10% of the time.
