Staff Developer, Identity

About the role

Join the Identity Platform team at 1Password as a Staff Developer. This role involves shaping the architecture, evolution, and reliability of core identity systems that power 1Password. You will work on authentication, authorization, session management, device trust, policy enforcement, and integrations with external identity providers.

Responsibilities

• Design and evolve identity services that power secure access across 1Password products
• Architect scalable systems for authentication, authorization, federation, session management, and policy enforcement
• Partner with technical leaders to build consensus and manage dependencies as part of delivering technical vision
• Write code with a focus on reliability, durability, and maintainability
• Mentor engineers at various stages of their careers and foster technical growth
• Influence long-term platform strategy and align identity capabilities with broader company goals
• Anticipate security risks and ensure compliance with modern standards and best practices
• Improve the developer experience for teams building on identity services

Requirements

• 8+ years of experience building resilient and reliable software systems
• Deep Go programming expertise
• Strong understanding of authentication, authorization, and identity concepts (OAuth, OIDC, scoped access, policy enforcement)
• 5+ years of hands-on experience in identity and access management
• Proven ability to lead identity strategy and mentor teams across functions using outstanding communication skills, driving a security-focused culture across large organizations
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to engage technical and non-technical audiences
• Proven ability to define and execute technical roadmaps
• Deep expertise in distributed systems, system architecture, and product development within a cross-functional environment
• Proven ability to lead technical discussions and drive architectural decisions
• A track record of raising quality standards through testing, observability, operational excellence, and secure development practices
• Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to navigate complex technical challenges
• Curiosity and a desire to stay current with evolving identity standards and emerging technologies

Qualifications

• Experience with OAuth 2.0, OpenID Connect, SAML, SCIM, WebAuthn, FIDO2, or similar standards
• Familiarity with enterprise identity, federation, or directory integrations
• Experience building token services, policy engines, or high-scale authorization systems
• Understanding of zero trust architectures and device trust models
• Experience mitigating common vulnerabilities in authentication and authorization systems

Skills

• Strong programming skills in Go
• Knowledge of authentication and authorization concepts
• Experience with distributed systems and system architecture
• Ability to communicate effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders
• Experience with identity and access management
• Experience with security best practices

Pay

The annual base salary for this role is between $192,000 USD and $278,000 USD for USA-based roles, and between $167,000 CAD and $242,000 CAD for Canada-based roles.

Schedule

This is a remote opportunity within Canada and the US.
