About the role

We are seeking a Staff Data Platform Engineer to join our dynamic team. This role involves architecting, building, and maintaining robust, scalable data systems that directly impact the lives and well-being of thousands of workers worldwide. The ideal candidate will have 7+ years of experience in data platform engineering, data infrastructure, or related technical roles, along with a strong programming background and operational maturity.

Responsibilities

  • Architect, build, and maintain data systems that deliver end customer value
  • Centralize and standardize data collection, data transformation, and analysis, data storage, and data serving approaches and processes
  • Support our ML/GenAI teams and functionality with platform capabilities for data delivery, processing, and infrastructure
  • Support our reporting and analytics teams in delivering both internal and customer-facing business insights
  • Stay current with emerging technologies and trends in a fast-evolving technology ecosystem
  • Operatively manage our data infrastructure, vendors, tooling, and processes

Requirements

  • 7+ years of experience in data platform engineering, data infrastructure, or related technical roles
  • Strong programming background (e.g., Python)
  • Operational maturity (e.g., CI/CD systems, Infrastructure as Code, Kubernetes, monitoring, distributed systems, security and privacy best practices, etc.)
  • Experience in building and maintaining analytics stacks (e.g., Snowflake, dbt, Looker)
  • Experience running GenAI/ML systems in production (e.g., MLOps tooling, vector search, embedding stores, feature engineering at scale, etc.)
  • Experience architecting data systems (e.g., Airflow, Kafka, general system design)

Qualifications

  • Core belief that a strong data foundation is fundamental to building great products
  • The ability to set technical direction for how the data platform evolves to support AI-driven product capabilities over a 1-2 year horizon
  • The ability to establish standards and best practices for data infrastructure, tooling, and AI-augmented workflows that other engineering teams adopt
  • The ability to mentor and influence engineers across the organization on data systems architecture and AI-augmented engineering practices
  • The ability to evaluate emerging AI and data tooling, and drive adoption of the highest-impact ones across the platform

Skills

  • Strong programming skills (e.g., Python)
  • Experience with data platforms (e.g., Snowflake, dbt, Looker)
  • Experience with machine learning and AI (e.g., MLOps tooling, vector search, embedding stores, feature engineering at scale)
  • Experience with data architecture (e.g., Airflow, Kafka, general system design)

Pay

$216,000 – $270,000: New York City and San Francisco
$194,400 – $243,000: All other locations

Schedule

Hybrid Work Policy & Hub Locations
BetterUp is a hybrid company that values in-person collaboration. Our US hub locations include: Austin, TX; New York City, NY; San Francisco, CA; and the Arlington, VA.
Hybrid Expectation: You will be expected to work from your local office at least 2 days per week (or 8 days per month) and should be able to realistically commit to this structure before applying.
This hybrid role will require travel up to 25% of the time for client engagements.
If you are not located near a hub: You will work as a fully remote employee. This remote role will require travel up to 50% of the time for client engagements and internal BetterUp purposes.
