The Staff Biologist I/II position at Sequoia is seeking self-motivated individuals who are eager to steer the direction of their career in a company that promotes and supports professional development. The role plays a critical role in Sequoia’s foundational company initiative by supporting a variety of projects with flexible staffing requirements.
Responsibilities
- Monitoring project construction for compliance with environmental permits and mitigation plans.
- Conducting biological training for construction and operation crews.
- Providing field data for biological reports and memos, potentially including technical reports and habitat restoration plans as experience grows.
- Mapping existing biological resources.
- Assessing potential impacts on wildlife, including sensitive species.
- Reviewing construction bids for leadership consideration.
- Interpreting compliance packages, permits, and project scopes to ensure field compliance.
- Preparing biological reports and habitat restoration plans for simpler projects.
- Crafting thorough Biological Constraints Analyses with reasoned impact assessments and avoidance measures.
- Aiding in permit applications and project descriptions under Project Manager guidance.
- Developing cost estimates and project scopes for moderately complex construction compliance projects, with direct supervision from a Project Manager.
- Producing documents that are consistently free of glaring or repeated technical and grammatical errors.
Requirements
- Minimum of 1 to 5 years of full-time wildlife fieldwork and technical report writing experience.
- Master's Degree in Biology or related field may substitute up to 2 years of experience.
- Specialized federal 10(a)(1)(A) recovery permits and/or state MOUs may provide an additional year to count towards experience.
- Working understanding of California flora/fauna and the regulatory environment.
- Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills.
- Proficiency in MS Office Suite.
- Familiarity with GIS Mapping tools and the ability to navigate existing tools.
- Approvable as a Qualified Biologist level by regulatory agencies for at least one species.
- Valid Driver’s License.
- Ability to work long field days.
- Ability to traverse difficult terrain.
- Must be able to perform fieldwork and/or travel up to 90-100% of the time.
- Overnight stays required up to 25-75% of the time, depending on assigned projects.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Biology or related field.
- Ability to perform field studies independently with minimal supervision.
Skills
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Proficiency in MS Office Suite.
- Familiarity with GIS Mapping tools.

Pay
Compensation is commensurate with experience.
Schedule
Hours will be dependent on project needs, and travel is typically limited to within two hours of our Bay Area office location, with occasional exceptions.
