Staff Backend Engineer, Core DevOps

About the role

For our client, we are seeking a Staff Backend Engineer, Core DevOps to join the team of a leader in the Information Technology space. This role will focus on strengthening the core backend and DevOps foundation that supports multiple teams and critical production systems. You will help modernize legacy services, improve architectural coherence, and set standards that support reliable delivery at scale. The position also calls for close collaboration with technical leadership on platform investments, operational readiness, and engineering best practices.

Location: Remote - US based candidates only, no visa sponsorship available

Pay

$152,800 – $259,200 annually

Responsibilities

• Lead the design and execution of backend initiatives that integrate multiple teams
• Drive efforts to modernize legacy backend systems while ensuring architectural coherence
• Define best practices for APIs, schema evolution, testing, and security standards
• Establish robust patterns for data management, service reliability, and operational documentation
• Guide the implementation of Go service patterns and Kubernetes practices for production environments
• Participate in incident response, serving as a technical expert during emergencies
• Collaborate with leadership on strategic platform decisions and investment priorities
• Mentor team members and promote the adoption of efficient coding patterns and workflows

Qualifications

• 5-7 years of backend engineering experience, preferably in leading technical projects across multiple teams
• Proficient in backend architecture with a focus on complex applications, services, and platforms
• Demonstrated experience in modernizing monoliths and developing modular architectures
• Strong skills in documenting technical decisions and creating clear proposals for team alignment
• Ability to balance technical decisions with customer satisfaction and delivery timelines
• Mentorship experience guiding junior engineers and shaping coding standards through reviews
• Familiarity with AI-assisted engineering workflows within production environments
