Staff Attorney- Union, MO Office
Legal Services of Eastern Missouri, Inc. (LSEM) is a nonprofit law firm providing free, quality civil legal services to clients living with low income and limited opportunity. This full-time, hybrid position (three days per week in the Union, Missouri office) serves Franklin, Lincoln, Montgomery, Warren, and Washington counties.
About the role
The Staff Attorney will provide direct representation in civil legal matters, primarily family law cases for survivors of domestic violence (orders of protection, divorce, custody, paternity, minor guardianships), as well as eviction defense, housing-assistance preservation, and consumer-collection actions. The role includes systemic advocacy, community outreach, and collaboration with social workers, paralegals, and other LSEM staff across offices.
Responsibilities
- Handle all aspects of litigation: drafting pleadings, discovery, motion practice, trial preparation, trials, and appeals
- Manage a diverse caseload spanning Warren, Lincoln, Franklin, Montgomery, and Washington counties
- Identify and litigate systemic issues affecting low-income rural clients
- Conduct legal research and analysis
- Perform community outreach and presentations
- Collaborate with LSEM staff, other legal-services programs, and community partners
- Other duties as assigned
Requirements
- JD and admission to practice in Missouri (or eligibility for admission)
- Demonstrated commitment to public-interest law or legal services for low-income individuals (strongly preferred)
- Experience in family law and with survivors of domestic or sexual violence (preferred)
- Knowledge of USDA, HUD, FDCPA, and other housing/consumer-protection regulations (helpful)
- Strong litigation and advocacy skills
- Ability to relate to and work with low-income rural clients and community stakeholders
- Excellent communication, organizational, and teamwork skills
- Flexibility, creativity, and a passion for the legal-aid mission
- Reliable transportation to travel across multiple counties for court appearances and client meetings
