About the role

The Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) Scheduling & Estimating Section of the Design Division is hiring for a Staff 2, Associate Engineer in Carson City, NV. It serves a pivotal role in supporting the successful planning and delivery of transportation projects throughout the state.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, review, and validate detailed engineers’ cost estimates using NDOT’s Masterworks system.
  • Ensure that estimates are complete, accurate, and compliant with current departmental standards and procedures.
  • Maintain bid price tables, author and update the cost estimation manual, and train project estimators in the proper use of NDOT’s electronic bidding and cost estimation platforms.
  • Coordinate across multiple NDOT divisions to facilitate funding alignment and project scheduling.
  • Maintain the integrity of project data within Masterworks, ensuring all project information is current, consistent, and accessible for decision-making and reporting purposes.
  • Collaborate with NDOT’s Information Technology division to initiate, test, and validate system enhancements and bug fixes within the Masterworks environment.
  • Ensure successful deployment of system updates and maintain operational reliability.
  • Contribute to early-phase project development by assisting in the creation of conceptual design packages, including preliminary roadway geometrics, quantity takeoffs, and cost estimates that support scoping and feasibility analyses.

Requirements

Essential Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in civil engineering or closely related engineering field and two years of professional engineering experience;
  • Certification by the Nevada State Board of Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors as an Engineer Intern, and two years of professional engineering experience in civil engineering or closely related engineering field;
  • Two years of experience as a Staff 1, Associate Engineer or Supervisor 1, Associate Engineer in Nevada State service;
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience as described above.

Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Working knowledge of engineering principles and practices;
  • Computer software programs necessary to complete job assignments;
  • Ability to make logical engineering judgments and decisions;
  • Read and understand engineering information from plans, drawings, specifications, manuals, correspondence, reports, graphs and memos;
  • Communicate orally using appropriate vocabulary and grammar to obtain and provide information and explain policies and procedures;
  • Write engineering reports and other technical documents;
  • Understand and perform statistical computations;
  • Establish rapport and gain the trust of others;
  • Operate personal computers and associated engineering software;
  • All knowledge, skills and abilities required at the lower levels.

When January 1, June 19, July 4, November 11, or December 25 falls on a Saturday, the preceding Friday is the observed legal holiday.

If these days fall on Sunday, the following Monday is the observed holiday.

Eligibility for holiday pay is covered by the provisions of NAC 284.255.
