SST Systems Architect, Technical Lead

Fluidstack · Austin, TX · Today
On-siteEngineering$208k–$263k/yrFull-time

About the role

The Product Engineering Team at Fluidstack is responsible for architecting and developing the power and cooling systems that enable the company to deliver gigawatt-scale AI data centers faster and denser than traditional methods allow. This role specifically focuses on the Solid-State Transformer (SST) group, which is designing solid-state transformers as a core component of the power architecture.

Responsibilities

  • Architect a medium-voltage solid-state transformer that can be manufactured, serviced, and scaled across gigawatt-scale campuses, not just demonstrated in a lab.
  • Define the interface between the SST and the MVDC distribution system, including protection, control boundaries, and fault behavior.
  • Build a semiconductor and magnetics supply strategy that survives a thin 10kV SiC market over a multi-year horizon.
  • Develop converter hardware from topology selection through working prototypes on a schedule that data center construction actually depends on.
  • Own the system trade-offs and the interface with the MVDC systems team, writing down exactly where the SST stops and the system begins, precisely enough that both teams can design against it.
  • Develop a program plan and prototype roadmap, and make the build-vs-partner recommendation honestly, including the case where partnering is the right answer.
  • Develop vendor and research partnerships across device makers, labs, and universities that secure the devices, test capacity, and expertise the program needs.

Requirements

  • 15+ years in power conversion and experience leading an SST or MV converter program at the level of ABB/Hitachi Energy research, GE, Delta, EPRI, or a FREEDM/ETH/Aachen lineage lab.
  • Experience owning converter topology selection, semiconductor strategy, and system trade-offs at MW scale, and the ability to defend the choices made.
  • Experience leading converter development teams from architecture through working hardware, not just papers or simulations.
  • Expertise in the SiC ecosystem, capable of writing a five-year semiconductor strategy in a market where 10kV devices barely exist.
  • Experience living through a program that died or nearly died, and understanding the reasons behind its failure, along with knowing how to avoid similar issues in future projects.
  • Ability to write a 12-month program plan for 8 engineers and defend it line by line.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Materials Science, or a related field.
  • Experience with power electronics, magnetics, and controls engineering.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills.

Skills

  • Power conversion and transformer design experience.
  • Experience with semiconductor materials and manufacturing processes.
  • Knowledge of MVDC systems and their integration.
  • Experience with vendor and university research partnerships.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects simultaneously.

Benefits

Fluidstack offers competitive compensation and benefits, including:

  • Competitive salary range of $208K - $263K.
  • Flexible work arrangements.
  • Health insurance options.
  • Retirement savings plans.
  • Professional development opportunities.

Pay

$208K - $263K

Schedule

Full-time, Monday through Friday, with occasional evening and weekend work as needed.
