Sr Tool Designer - Tooling Logistics

About the role

The Sr Tool Designer develops design concepts and detailed layouts for complex special design tooling and equipment required for product manufacturing and acceptance. Performs project management activities and offers innovative solutions to significant CAD, manufacturing, and process problems. Serves as a direct customer interface for designs, concepts, cost/delivery estimates, and other services outside KCNSC.

Responsibilities

• Conceptualizes and designs product manufacturing tools, gages, and special machines.
• Provides engineering consultation on manufacturing processes, tooling and gaging requirements, and cost/delivery analysis.
• Reviews gage and tool designs for compatibility with product design and recommends product changes to reduce tooling cost and delivery time.
• Uses computerized design and computer-aided engineering tools (CAD/CAE/CAM) to perform job requirements and develops enhancements to improve productivity, cycle time, and cost.
• Represents the organization as a direct interface with Design Agency, NWC production sites, customers, and suppliers to assist in tool design-related issues and new business solicitation.
• Guides the efforts of other Tool Designers.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or equivalent.
• 5 or more years of Tool Designer experience.
• United States Citizenship.
• Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) security clearance (Q-level may be required).li>
• Regular and reliable on-site attendance as determined by business needs.
• Ability to travel up to 5% of the time.

Qualifications

• Experience in design drafting or equivalent using CAD systems.
• Toolmaker or Machinist background.
• Prior experience working with vendors.
• Manufacturing and project management experience.
• Formal training in tool design (e.g., Industrial Technology curriculum, Tool and Die Apprenticeship, or equivalent practical experience).
• Knowledge of manufacturing processes, fabrication techniques, and departmental/project leadership.
