Responsible for Motion Control System Engineering design and controls development for off-highway equipment and US defense applications. Initiates, develops, and validates motion control systems to meet project goals.
Responsibilities
- Layout, design, and create hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical drawings via CAD systems.
- Develop control architectures for advanced motion control systems or subsystems using various control strategies based on project requirements, including electronic control modules when necessary.
- Perform mathematical modeling and simulation for hydraulic systems using computer-aided tools.
- Develop test plans for systems/subsystems and perform accelerated performance testing of hydraulic systems and components on prototype builds.
- Monitor prototype builds to assure proper assembly and functionality.
- Review, analyze, and report on system performance compliance via test reports, spec sheets, etc.; develop action plans to meet compliance if necessary.
- Write work instructions for prototype and test technicians.
- Work in a lab environment as required to complete prototype build/testing.
- Provide leadership and coordination to the engineering team; collaborate with multi-functional teams to develop cost-effective, reliable, and manufacturable systems/sub-systems.
- Define and document system descriptions and validation processes, including embedded traceability for acceptance.
- Develop predictive models to simulate and verify system performance.
- Create system interface, maintenance, and training documentation (functional diagrams, schematics, interface control documents, performance reports, safety and reliability analyses).
- Provide technical system information affecting long-range plant and product engineering planning.
- Communicate with customers to identify new business opportunities, present capabilities, and clarify technical requirements.
- Write technical proposals by reviewing and interpreting system requirements.
- Lead or participate in feasibility studies for new or modified equipment, considering technical, economic, and resource factors; present findings and recommendations.
- Investigate system design factors (function, performance, material availability, interchangeability, strength-weight efficiency, contractual specifications) to determine optimum solutions.
- Prepare or direct preparation of system layouts, detailed drawings, and schematics using engineering CAD tools and industry/military standards.
- Develop critical data and preliminary system documentation for customer proposals.
- Review drawings and layouts for clarity, completeness, form, fit, functionality, and conformity to standards; identify design errors and direct improvements.
- Lead efforts to obtain industry/governmental agency approval.
- Refine and enhance products/processes using continuous improvement principles; recommend actions based on data analysis.
- Maintain professional and technical knowledge through workshops, publications, benchmarking, and professional associations.
- Represent the company on high-level projects; share specialized knowledge and mentor less experienced employees.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering and minimum of five years’ experience in OEM construction equipment or US defense industry design.
- Sound understanding of motion control technologies and control strategies.
- Previous OEM machine application knowledge and basic project management techniques.
- Technical proficiency with hydraulic closed-loop and open-loop system design concepts.
- Broad knowledge of related engineering areas to support systems expertise.
- Knowledge of regulatory compliance requirements in assigned areas.
- Ability to apply continuous improvement principles and techniques.
- Problem-solving skills for complex technical challenges; ability to evaluate alternative solutions across teams.
- Ability to influence team objectives and provide milestone-based status updates.
- Strong analytical skills for interpreting highly technical studies and reports.
- Effective communication and presentation skills for diverse audiences (team members, leadership, vendors, customers).
- Leadership in area of specialization; ability to act as prime contact on high-level projects.
