Sr Surgical Technologist (CST)

About the role

The successful candidate will be responsible for preparing the operating room, equipment, and supplies for each patient. They will assist surgeons and nurses during various surgical procedures and maintain high standards of sterile technique.

Responsibilities

• Prepares the operating room, equipment, and supplies for each patient.
• Anticipates additional instrumentation, equipment, and supplies needed for the procedure.
• Passes instruments and supplies to the surgeon and nursing staff during surgical procedures.
• Assists the circulating RN with counts of sponges, needles, and other surgical items.
• Maintains sterile technique and cleans instruments for terminal sterilization.
• Participates in departmental quality improvement initiatives and reports near misses.
• May be required to be on-call during emergencies.

Requirements

• High School diploma or equivalent.
• Successful completion of an accredited Surgical Technology program or military training equivalency.
• Two years as a Surgical Technologist.
• BLS - Basic Life Support or Instructor (AHA).

Skills and Abilities

• Demonstrates the skills and competencies necessary to safely perform the assigned job.
• Sufficient proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing the English language.
• Effective communication with patients, physicians, family members, and co-workers.
• Understanding of medical terminology.
• Independence and sound judgment in interactions with physicians, interprofessional care team, and patients and their families.
• Knowledge and appropriate use of hospital databases such as EPIC.
• Strong knowledge in use of procedure software.
• Competency in decontamination and use of autoclave equipment.
• Expertise in one or more surgical specialty service lines.

Qualifications

• Two years as a Surgical Technologist.
