Sr. Staff Engineer, Motor Design

About the role

As a Senior Staff Motor Design Engineer at Marotta Controls, you will design and optimize electric motors and implement technology to meet customer requirements while aiding in the capture and retention of profitable business. This role covers all aspects of Marotta’s electric motors, including magnetics, materials, GD&T, assembly, manufacturability, analysis, inspection, test, and verification. You will collaborate daily with internal and external stakeholders such as engineers, technicians, program management, procurement, supply chain, suppliers, test facilities, and contractors.

Responsibilities

• Design, prototype, assemble, and test electromagnetic topologies for high-performance and reliability aerospace and defense motors in an AS9100 environment.
• Develop breakthrough motor technologies to help Marotta win in served market segments.
• Apply expertise in materials selection and GD&T to optimize designs for manufacturability and cost.
• Utilize electromagnetic principles and analysis tools (Finite Element Analysis, Simulation, Modeling).
• Lead and facilitate design and manufacturing efforts to optimize cost, efficiency, mass, thermal, and other system tradeoffs.
• Collaborate with actuation system and test engineering to drive manufacturable designs for new programs.
• Apply knowledge of design principles, operation, testing, and reliability for motor subcomponents (e.g., magnet wires, insulation systems, laminations, magnets, shafts, bearings, enclosures, EMI, sealing).
• Work with suppliers to ensure conformity to contract and technical documentation (e.g., drawings, specifications).
• Inspect, witness, and verify in-process and final product inspections to ensure conformity to specifications.
• Audit and review supplier processes to mitigate manufacturing risks.
• Review technical documents during product development to identify potential manufacturing challenges or cost drivers.
• Travel to Marotta facilities and supplier manufacturing sites as needed.
• Bring initiatives to closure through effective interaction with internal and external stakeholders.
• Develop a thorough understanding of customer requirements while balancing cost, technology, schedule, and risk.
• Adhere to safety, quality, housekeeping, and company policies/procedures.
• Contribute to a positive and cooperative work environment through effective communication.
• Actively participate in team meetings and improvement initiatives.
• Assist in training personnel on required technical tasks.
• Keep management informed of competitive landscape or evolving technologies.
• Complete special projects and miscellaneous assignments as required.

Work Environment

This role operates in both a professional office environment and a manufacturing/machine shop environment. Standard office equipment (computers, phones, photocopiers) is used, along with appropriate personal protective equipment (e.g., eye, hearing, and foot protection). This is a full-time position, and additional time or weekend work may be required as job duties demand. Infrequent travel is required.

Requirements

• B.S. in Electrical/Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent experience; other degrees may be considered).
• 5–10 years of experience in electro-magnetic motors, windings, products, and systems engineering.
• U.S. citizenship.

Skills

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills for interactions with all levels of personnel, suppliers, customers, and external agents.
• Highly computer literate, with expertise in MS Office/PC and applicable systems, programs, and equipment.
• Strong problem-solving techniques and analytical ability.

Physical Requirements

• Regularly required to see, talk, and hear.
• Frequently required to reach with hands and arms, and use hands to finger, handle, or feel.
• Frequently required to sit, stand, walk, and move about the facility.
• May be required to lift and/or move items weighing up to 30 pounds.

Pay

$138,000 – $185,000 per year. Compensation is determined based on job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and internal consistency. This role includes incentive compensation and a comprehensive benefits package.
