Sr. Splunk Engineer

About the role

The Senior Splunk Engineer supports Production Assurance and Reliability Operations Services at Early Warning, ensuring a world-class enterprise log management solution. This role oversees Splunk Enterprise infrastructure, manages a multi-site hybrid environment, and collaborates with stakeholders to maintain operational and security integrity.

Responsibilities

• Oversees Splunk Enterprise infrastructure and tunes for optimal data onboarding, performance, and capacity management.
• Maintains and expands IT architecture to support business needs, including software additions and cloud-based systems.
• Maintains Splunk monitoring and effective alerting to meet Service Level Agreements (SLAs).
• Ensures logging environment supports threat detection and response in partnership with information security teams.
• Participates in incident management and response during outages or breaches.
• Communicates with internal/external customers to gather requirements, troubleshoot, and develop Splunk searches, reports, and dashboards.
• Develops and maintains documentation for changes to the environment.
• Supports compliance efforts by providing metrics and collaborating with auditors.
• Collaborates with the Security team for incident resolution and risk evaluations.
• Assists with on-call rotations to provide 24x7 support.
• Advises end users on best practices and company standards.
• Stays updated on industry technologies and strategies.
• Protects the integrity and confidentiality of systems and data.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED.
• Minimum 5 years of progressive Splunk administration, architect, and logging experience in a multisite environment.
• Splunk Certified Administrator certification required.
• Proficiency with major Splunk components, Linux, and Unix CLI.
• Experience with common ingestions strategies, scripting (e.g., Bash, PERL, Python), and logging technologies (syslog-ng/rsyslog, ELK, Filebeat, Kafka, Cribl, Fluentd, Graylog).
• X.509/PKI fundamentals and practical implementation experience.
• Understanding and troubleshooting experience with UDP, TCP, SSL/TLS, HTTP/S, REST APIs, load balancers, and forward proxies.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Math, or Physical Science, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Additional college-level classes in Computer Science, Engineering, or business-related fields are beneficial.
• Practical experience with Splunk ES/UBA, UFs, HFs, HEC, TAs/add-ons, syslog, etc.
• Strong foundation in Linux and ability to troubleshoot various aspects of integration.
• Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, to articulate technical ideas to non-technical audiences.

Skills

• Technical expertise in Splunk administration, architecture, and scalability.
• Linux and Windows foundation with an emphasis on Unix/Linux CLI.
• Proficiency in Shell/Interpreter scripting (e.g., Bash, PERL, Python).
• Experience with Splunk lifecycle, including data ingestion pipelines and SPL.
• Knowledge of logging technologies (syslog-ng/rsyslog, ELK, Filebeat, Kafka, Cribl, Fluentd, Graylog).
• Ability to handle large projects and manage day-to-day operations.
• Strong troubleshooting and organizational skills.
• Can-do attitude and ability to adjust to changing requirements.

Benefits

Base Pay Scale: $132,000 - $165,000 in Phoenix, AZ/Chicago, IL; $158,000 - $198,000 in San Francisco, CA. Candidates are eligible for a discretionary incentive plan and benefits, including:
