About the role
The UI Software Engineer at Optum works on designing, building, and refining user-facing features that make applications intuitive, responsive, and visually consistent. They translate product requirements and design mockups into clean, maintainable code using front-end technologies, collaborate with designers, product managers, and backend engineers to ensure seamless interactions and data flow.
Responsibilities
- Build accessible, reusable UI components in React 19 with TypeScript 5, following industry best practices.
- Translate dynamic mockups into production-ready components and pages, ensuring WCAG AA compliance, keyboard accessibility, and semantic HTML.
- Implement application flows using React Router 7 and state management with Redux Toolkit and React Redux.
- Maintain and evolve our SCSS-based design system; document and showcase components in Storybook 8.
- Optimize rendering, bundle size, and runtime performance using memoization, hooks, and Nx workspace tooling.
- Write and maintain unit and integration tests using Jest 29 and Testing Library; contribute to E2E coverage with Playwright.
- Collaborate with shared libraries, strict typing, and CI pipelines; follow code review and git workflows.
- Contribute to internationalization and runtime translation patterns and ensure robust error handling and analytics instrumentation where needed.
- Participate in Agile ceremonies; partner with design and product to plan features, refine requirements, and evaluate technical trade-offs.
- Create reusable components and hooks that reduce duplication and accelerate feature delivery.
- Write maintainable code that fits industry standards: typed, readable, and well-tested.

- 2+ years of experience with Redux Toolkit and React Redux; comfortable designing slices/selectors and handling async flows.
- 2+ years of experience with React Router (v7) for routing, guarded flows, and navigation patterns.
- 2+ years of experience with SCSS for styling (variables, mixins, responsive layouts), with a focus on maintainable, mobile-first design.
- 2+ years of experience maintaining a living design system and documenting components in Storybook 8.
- 2+ years of experience with Jest 29 and Testing Library for unit/integration tests; Playwright for E2E; familiarity with mock strategies and test isolation.
