Sr. Software Engineer - Systems Insights
About the Role
Cribl is building the next generation of customer-facing metric storage and query capabilities for observability data at massive scale. We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer to help design and build the metric store that will power how customers ingest, retain, query, and analyze their time-series data across Cribl products. This role is ideal for someone who loves distributed systems, high-volume data platforms, query performance, and the practical realities of building reliable SaaS infrastructure.
You will work on systems that handle high-cardinality telemetry, customer-facing APIs, storage schemas, query paths, ingestion pipelines, and the operational tooling needed to run them in production. You will partner closely with Product, Design, Engineering, and Operations to shape a critical new product capability from early architecture through production hardening. The work will span backend services, data modeling, performance optimization, cloud infrastructure, and customer-facing product behavior. Your technical leadership will help define how Cribl customers store, explore, and act on their metrics for years to come.
Responsibilities
- Help design and build Cribl’s customer-facing metric store for high-volume telemetry data
- Write clean, maintainable, and testable code with an eye toward performance, observability, and operational resilience
- Build scalable backend services and APIs for metric ingestion, storage, metadata management, and query execution
- Work on data modeling and storage patterns for time-series data, including high-cardinality dimensions, labels, fingerprints, rollups, and retention strategies
- Partner with Product and Design to turn complex observability workflows into intuitive customer-facing capabilities
- Collaborate with engineers across Cribl to integrate metric storage and query capabilities into broader product experiences
- Analyze and improve query performance, ingestion throughput, storage efficiency, and system reliability
- Help define engineering practices for a new product area, including testing, deployment, monitoring, and operational readiness
- Coach and empower less senior engineers to own larger technical problems and grow their impact
- Work with Management, Product Engineering, and Operations to plan and forecast quarterly goals that balance new features, technical debt, reliability, and customer needs
- Champion the full software development lifecycle from requirements and design to testing, deployment, and production support
- Share on-call responsibilities as part of a team that embraces service ownership
This position may require stand-by, on-call, or off-hours duties.
Requirements
- Applicants must be able to comply with U.S. government security requirements for access to FedRAMP-authorized systems, which may include U.S. citizenship
- Strong experience building backend services in complex, large-scale distributed systems
- Ability to write clean, maintainable, and testable production code, preferably in Node.js and TypeScript
- Experience building SaaS platforms, data platforms, observability systems, or high-volume cloud services
- Experience working with time-series data, metrics, telemetry pipelines, query systems, or analytical databases
- Experience designing APIs and interfaces that are secure, intuitive, and built for long-term evolution
- Strong understanding of data structures, algorithms, Linux, networking, and distributed systems fundamentals
- Experience with cloud infrastructure on AWS or another major cloud provider
- Experience with storage systems, query performance, indexing strategies, partitioning, caching, or data lifecycle management
- Experience with observability concepts such as metrics, labels, dimensions, cardinality, histograms, counters, gauges, and query languages such as PromQL is a strong plus
- Experience with systems such as ClickHouse, Prometheus, Mimir, Thanos, VictoriaMetrics, OpenTelemetry, Kafka, Kinesis, S3, or similar technologies is a strong plus
- Experience using testing frameworks and tools such as Mocha, Jest, Cypress, or similar tools to automate regression checks
- Experience with CI/CD pipelines such as Bitbucket, Jenkins, CircleCI, GitHub Actions, or similar systems
- You are a self-starter who can operate with minimal supervision and learn quickly in ambiguous technical areas
- You care about details and are dedicated to elegant, high-quality software
- You are comfortable making tradeoffs between correctness, performance, cost, operability, and customer experience
- No fear! Speak your mind
