About the Role
The Sr. Six Sigma Engineer is a hands-on manufacturing-focused expert in structured problem solving and continuous improvement tools, based at EOTECH headquarters in Plymouth, MI. This role leads root cause investigations into process yield and product quality issues, drives data-driven continuous improvement initiatives, and resolves non-conformances. The successful candidate will act as a working leader, championing improvement metrics, facilitating training, and collaborating across functions to achieve rapid, sustainable improvements in scrap reduction, product quality, and process stability.
Responsibilities
- Lead cross-functional teams in problem-solving activities using Six-Sigma, Lean, Shainin, or other structured methods.
- Develop and maintain statistical process control tools for early detection and reaction to process changes impacting product quality.
- Collaborate with Supplier Quality and Supply Chain to resolve vendor quality issues and maintain an effective supply chain value stream.
- Develop plans, flow charts, inspection methods, and procedures (including detailed instructions, checklists, and sampling plans) to ensure products meet quality requirements throughout the product lifecycle.
- Generate and maintain Process Control Plans and FMEAs throughout the product lifecycle.
- Deploy trend charts, histograms, and other SPC tools to monitor process health in fabrication and assembly departments; analyze metrics to identify improvement opportunities.
- Drive corrective and preventive actions to resolution in partnership with internal and external parties.
- Lead and educate teams on the DMAIC process for problem-solving and continuous improvement.
- Manage fault investigation and troubleshooting of assembly/test equipment, measuring devices, and tools.
- Support budget and schedule activities as required by programs and management.
- Demonstrate ethical and professional behavior aligned with company values.
- Ensure high levels of customer service with internal and external parties.
- Perform job duties in compliance with environmental, health, and safety regulations, policies, and procedures.
- All other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering; Master’s degree or relevant certifications are a plus.
- 7+ years of experience in manufacturing engineering, process engineering, quality engineering, or continuous improvement.
- Experience with product/process quality improvement, data analysis tools (e.g., Minitab), failure investigation, and corrective actions.
- Experience with design and maintenance of assembly fixtures.
- Working proficiency in structured problem-solving methods.
- Six Sigma Black Belt required (Master Black Belt preferred).
- Shainin Journeyman certification preferred.
- Ability to read and interpret complex mechanical drawings.
- Strong analytical skills to organize and analyze large volumes of numerical and non-numerical data.
- Clear and concise communication of findings.
- Extensive application of technical principles, theories, and concepts to solve non-routine, complex problems.
- Expertise as a facilitator/trainer of problem-solving tools.
- Ability to work with limited oversight across multiple departments and lead high-impact projects.
- Collaborates with production staff, engineers, technical staff, and cross-functional managers, including executive leadership.
Working Conditions
- Exposure to lasers, moving mechanical parts, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock.
- Regular exposure to low-light or dark working conditions; noise levels are usually quiet.
- Travel (ground and air) required to visit suppliers and separate manufacturing sites, including potential international travel.
- Physical demands include frequent sitting, standing, walking, and use of hands; occasional stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling.
- Ability to lift up to 25 pounds occasionally.
- Overtime may be required.
