Sr Scientist, Plasma Control
About the role
The Sr Scientist of Plasma Control at Epic Science TAE is responsible for maintaining and advancing the development of the Real-time Plasma Control System (RTPCS) for the company's fusion device. This role involves integrating plasma diagnostics and actuators into a control system to achieve and maintain plasma performance and stability. It requires a strong background in both experimental plasma physics and advanced control systems, particularly in FPGA-based architectures.
Responsibilities
- Develop and implement control algorithms addressing plasma stability, confinement, and performance optimization
- Collaborate with the experimental team to define and implement control strategies
- Maintain and enhance the capabilities of the Real-time Plasma Control System (RTPCS) on C-2W
- Design and develop next-generation RTPCS for future TAE fusion devices
- Coordinate work across a multidisciplinary team of physicists, engineers, and computer scientists
- Publish findings and engage with the broader fusion community
- Align plasma control development with organizational milestones towards commercial fusion energy
- Stay updated on technological advancements relevant to fusion plasma control
- Foster relationships with external partners in the field
Requirements
- Ph.D. in Physics or related field
- Demonstrated experience in experimental plasma physics and magnetic confinement fusion research
- Proven expertise in real-time control systems, including FPGA-based hardware and firmware development
- Experience in programming multitasking Real-Time Operating Systems and embedded control systems
- Proficient in embedded C/C++ programming
- Knowledge of system design for embedded platforms using Model-Based Design approaches (Matlab, Simulink, Stateflow)
- Excellent leadership, team management, and communication skills
- Strong documentation and organizational skills
- Ability to multitask and think quickly in a fast-paced environment
Qualifications
- Strong background in both fusion energy science and plasma physics
- Understanding of electromagnetism and modern Bayesian and ML methods
- Knowledge of advanced mathematical and computational AI/ML methods
Skills
- Advanced knowledge of control theory and systems engineering
- Experience with FPGA-based systems and embedded control systems
- Proficiency in embedded C/C++ programming
- Model-Based Design approaches (Matlab, Simulink, Stateflow)
- Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills
- Strong communication and collaboration skills

Pay
The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements depending on the role offered (non-Sr., Sr.). The compensation range for these roles is $120,000 - $145,000 annually.
