About the role

This is a unique opportunity to join a talented team of scientists at the frontiers of innovation in next-gen sequencing. As a Sr. Scientist at Illumina, you will work in a dynamic, team-oriented environment to play an integral role in developing new sequencing technologies. Using your electrochemistry expertise in a multidisciplinary setting, you will collaborate with external and internal partners to push the frontiers of electrochemistry in the development of exciting state-of-the-art technology.

Based at our headquarters in San Diego, you will join our Advanced Science department as an Electrochemistry expert in a permanent role. As part of the Material and Applied Surface Science group, you will play an integral role in developing new sequencing technologies and related applications. The candidate must be adaptable to a wide range of techniques and methods used in life sciences.

Responsibilities

  • Design, execute, and interpret experiments utilizing an understanding of best-practice electrochemistry methods.
  • Effectively work within multidisciplinary and international teams, routinely interacting with synthetic chemists, protein chemists, bioinformatics scientists, and engineers to solve problems and devise experimental plans.
  • Innovate and devise creative solutions to electrochemical problems.
  • Participate in collaborative research and analyze large, complex data sets.
  • Be both a strong individual contributor and a collaborative team member.
  • Maintain detailed lab notebooks, prepare reports, updates, and summaries for managers and teams.
  • Write technical reports and prepare presentations for cross-functional and cross-site technical teams.

Requirements

  • Expertise in electrochemistry and electrochemical techniques pertaining to biodetectors.
  • Experience in method development for the stability of electrode systems using electrochemical, analytical, and surface analysis tools.
  • Experience in electrochemistry in constricted volumes.
  • Experience in micro/nano-fabrication of electrodes (a plus).
  • Ability to use data and risks to formulate clear decision criteria to influence technical direction at a project level.
  • Experience with a wide range of standard analytical techniques and surface characterization techniques.
  • Understanding of microfluidics, fluorescence-based assays, and fundamentals of DNA (bio)chemistry (a plus).

Qualifications

Typically requires a minimum of 5 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree; or 3 years and a Master’s degree; or a PhD without experience; or equivalent work experience. Ph.D. in Electrochemistry, Chemistry, or Material Science with minimal experience (0-1 years).

Pay

The estimated base salary range for the Sr. Scientist - Electrochemist role based in the United States of America is $98,400 - $147,600. Should the level or location of the role change during the hiring process, the applicable base pay range may be updated accordingly. The range reflects long-term growth in the role; therefore, most candidates are hired between the minimum and middle of the range. Placement depends on experience, skills, location, and internal equity. Additionally, all employees are eligible for one of our variable cash programs (bonus or commission), and eligible roles may receive equity as part of the compensation package.
