Sr. Revenue Accountant
Position Overview
We are seeking a detail-oriented and highly analytical Sr. Revenue Accountant to join our Finance & Accounting team in a fast-growing life science consulting organization. This role plays a critical part in ensuring accurate revenue recognition, contract review, billing, and accounts receivable management in compliance with ASC 606.
Key Responsibilities
- Apply ASC 606 guidance to evaluate and recognize revenue for consulting, project-based, fixed-fee, T&M, FTE, milestone-based, and multi-element service arrangements.
- Review customer contracts, Master Service Agreements (MSAs), Statements of Work (SOWs), amendments, and change orders to assess revenue recognition implications, billing terms, variable consideration, and contract modifications.
- Analyze and identify multiple performance obligations within customer contracts and determine appropriate revenue allocation and timing of recognition in accordance with ASC 606.
- Prepare and review customer invoices to ensure accuracy, completeness, and compliance with contractual terms and approved pricing structures.
- Manage accounts receivable and cash collection activities, including monitoring aging reports, following up on past-due balances, resolving customer disputes, and supporting collection escalation efforts.
- Perform monthly revenue and AR reconciliations, deferred revenue analysis, variance analysis, and support month-end and quarter-end close activities.
- Maintain revenue and AR accounting records within NetSuite, ensuring proper system setup, revenue mapping, and data integrity.
- Support external audits by preparing revenue recognition documentation, reconciliations, contract support, and responding to audit inquiries.
- Partner cross-functionally with Sales, Operations, Project Management, and Finance teams to resolve contract, billing, invoicing, revenue recognition, and collection-related issues.
- Identify and implement opportunities to improve revenue accounting processes, internal controls, billing workflows, reporting capabilities, and system automation.
- Assist with ad-hoc accounting projects, ERP/system implementations, process improvement initiatives, and financial reporting requests as assigned.
Qualifications and Requirements
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- Experience: Minimum of 4–7 years of experience in revenue accounting, contract accounting, invoicing, and accounts receivable. Big 4 or public accounting/audit experience preferred.
- Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Strong working knowledge of ASC 606 revenue recognition guidance and application to service-based arrangements. Advanced Excel skills required, including data analysis and reconciliations. Hands-on experience with NetSuite or similar ERP systems preferred. Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills with high attention to detail. Excellent communication skills with the ability to collaborate effectively across departments.
Prioritized Qualifications
- Experience within professional services, consulting, life sciences, biotechnology, or pharmaceutical industries.
- CPA or CPA-track preferred.
- Familiarity with project-based ERP and PSA systems such as Kantata is a plus.
