At Houston Methodist Hospital, the Senior Radiation Therapist plays a key role in planning, delivering, and monitoring radiation therapy treatments as an essential member of the radiation oncology team.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver a planned course of radiation therapy accurately and safely, as prescribed by the Radiation Oncologist.
  • Perform simulation operations, including selecting and fabricating appropriate immobilization, custom blocks, and positioning aids.
  • Provide clear explanations and instructions to patients at their level of understanding.
  • Assess patients’ conditions, needs, and side effects daily; refer patients to appropriate resources and notify the Radiation Oncologist of concerns.
  • Follow principles of radiation protection for patient, self, and others, adhering to safety and infection control procedures.
  • Maintain proper sterile techniques and ensure compliance with radiation safety standards.
  • Perform and document warm-up procedures, machine operation checks, and equipment malfunctions.
  • Conduct chart reviews, document simulation steps accurately, and monitor daily doses to prevent exceeding prescribed limits.
  • Mentor Radiation Therapists and students, fostering skill development and confidence.
  • Facilitate open, professional communication and collaboration within the healthcare team.
  • Provide accurate and complete documentation of patient procedures and validate charges at the time of service.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives, department projects, and continuing education.
  • Utilize resources efficiently and contribute ideas to improve department services.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an education program approved by the credentialing body for required certifications.
  • Three years of experience as a licensed Radiologic Technologist Therapist (R.T.(T)).

Qualifications

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) or Instructor certification (AHA).
  • Certified Medical Radiologic Technologist (CMRT) – State Licensure (Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation).
  • Registration as a Medical Radiologic Technologist (MRT-GC) through the Texas Medical Board.
  • One of the following certifications:
    • ARRT-R – Radiologic Technologist – Radiographer (ARRT)
    • ARRT-THR – Radiologic Technologist – Radiation Therapy (ARRT)

Skills

  • Proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing English for effective communication with patients, families, and healthcare teams.
  • Strong interpersonal and teamwork skills, ensuring excellent customer service.
  • Basic computer knowledge, including Hospital/Radiation Oncology Information Systems and Office software.
  • Ability to adapt to multiple priorities with minimal supervision and organize workflow efficiently.
  • Sound clinical judgment and problem-solving abilities in challenging patient care situations.

Schedule

  • On-call requirements during emergencies (e.g., disasters, severe weather events).
  • May require travel within the Houston Metropolitan area.

Work Attire

  • Scrubs, business professional, or other department-approved attire.
