About the role
The Sr R&D Engineer will drive the design and development of medical-device systems, subsystems, and components while adhering to design controls, cost targets, and high-volume manufacturing requirements.
Responsibilities
- Perform technical design analysis using first-principles calculations, stress analysis, FEA, design of experiments, and statistical methods.
- Develop product systems, subsystems, and components by evaluating design options, trade-offs, critical parameters, and manufacturability (GD&T).
- Integrate systems to meet business objectives, customer needs, and product requirements within defined cost targets.
- Select and apply the best mix of analytical, computational, and experimental methods to solve engineering problems and optimize designs.
- Ensure rigorous implementation of product-development processes and design-control procedures.
- Support current products through quality improvements, manufacturing enhancements, supply continuity, and cost-reduction initiatives.
- Execute technical and cross-functional project work.
- Analyze design solutions using first principles and advanced engineering methods such as FEA.
- Write detailed technical reports for design verification, testing, and design changes.
- Develop and execute test methods specifying measurement equipment, test setups, measurement systems analysis, and data analysis.
- Create realistic, actionable design plans and deliverables schedules; demonstrate accountability for task and project completion.
- Collaborate effectively with laboratory technicians and support staff.
Requirements
- BS or MS in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science & Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or a closely related field.
- Minimum of 3 years of engineering experience, with at least 2 years in medical-device product development and design.
- Experience with medical-device design controls and high-volume manufacturing.
- Proficiency in SolidWorks, Minitab, and FEA tools (Abaqus/Fluent) preferred.
- Understanding of DOE, statistical methods, and failure theory for plastics, elastomers, and metals under static and time-variable loading.
- Experience with contact and non-contact metrology and manufacturing process validation (IQ/OQ/PQ, First Article Inspection, Factory Acceptance Testing).
- Knowledge of disciplined product-development processes and regulatory/quality requirements (21 CFR 820.30).
- Strong written and oral communication skills; demonstrated leadership and team orientation.
- Must be local to Salt Lake City or able to relocate by May 2022; no relocation assistance provided.
- Stable work history preferred; unexplained gaps or frequent job changes may require review.
