Sr. Quality Engineer (Remote)

As a Sr. Quality Engineer, you will lead a team of QA testers/engineers in testing our suite of products and software, ensuring the highest quality solutions via SaaS and On-Premises models. This role reports to the Technology Department and involves driving QA frameworks, processes, and strategies while fostering collaboration across teams.
While some roles are based at our office locations, this position is remote and can be located in any of the following states: AL, AZ, FL, GA, IA, IL, IN, MI, MN, MO, NC, NE, PA, SC, TN, TX, UT, VA, and WV. Remote status and role locations are subject to change. Employees within a 90-minute radius of our Oak Brook, IL headquarters are required to adhere to in-office work guidelines of 4 days per month minimum (10 am to 2 pm, with one day being a Monday or Friday), except for support specialist positions. Relocation is not provided.
Responsibilities
- Direct the development of the QA strategy, methodology, discipline, and framework.
- Drive and improve the QA team in automated testing and agile testing practices.
- Provide technical expertise in test automation, testing methodologies, processes, tools, and techniques.
- Define QA strategy, approach, and execution in development projects.
- Lead and direct the QA team, including performance management, coaching, and professional development.
- Focus on continuous QA improvements, including the use of testing tools, techniques, and test automation.
- Build and maintain quality standards and enforce technical and testing standards.
- Monitor QA activities, test results, leaked defects, root cause analysis, and identify areas for improvement.
- Implement process improvements to enhance QA efforts.
- Ensure proper usage of testing tools for functional, performance, and automation testing.
- Manage training and continuous learning for QA staff through courses, conferences, meetups, and certifications.
- Serve as an escalation point for testing and quality assurance matters.
- Work with development teams to develop and execute QA strategies that meet department and corporate quality goals.
- Gather and present testing metrics and activities to key stakeholders.
- Collaborate with business partners (e.g., Customer Support, Client Services, Operations) to incorporate feedback into the QA process.
- Facilitate inter-team communication across agile projects.
- Measure product quality and share metrics with teams, management, and stakeholders.
- Balance best practices with delivering high business value (right vs. right now).
- Outline detailed testing tasks and estimates during sprint planning.
- Proactively avoid quality risks by asking the right questions to developers and QAs.
- Engage with developers to assess solution design impacts on dependencies.
- Design and produce high-quality automated test cases within a defined framework.
- Develop testable interfaces between the system under test and the automation framework.
- Translate manual regression test cases into automated tests.
- Ensure automated regression test cases are integrated and passing in nightly builds.
- Contribute to merge up/down processes and adhere to code promotion workflows.
- Employ static code analysis to identify test case readability, anti-patterns, and coverage.
- Monitor automated test results after code commits and hold teams accountable for quality.
- Conduct cross-team and inter-team automated test case reviews.
- Define, develop, maintain, and clean test data for automated test cases.
- Support timely releases and adherence to release activities.
- Collaborate outside the product team to encourage a development community.
- Promote self-study by sharing best practices and external perspectives.
- Review requirements, specifications, and technical design documents to provide feedback.
- Provide code review and analysis of automation code.
- Assist in managing and maintaining the regression test suite.
- Create detailed, comprehensive, and well-structured test plans and test cases.
- Estimate, prioritize, plan, and coordinate testing activities.
- Design, develop, and execute automation scripts using open-source tools.
- Identify, record, document, and track bugs.
- Perform thorough regression testing when bugs are resolved.
- Develop and apply testing processes for new and existing products to meet client needs.
- Liaise with internal teams (e.g., developers, product managers) to identify system requirements.
- Monitor debugging process results and investigate causes of non-conforming software.
- Train users to implement solutions for non-conforming software.
- Track quality assurance metrics, such as defect densities and open defect counts.
- Stay up to date with new testing tools and test strategies.
- Support and mentor junior team members.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- 7-10 years of experience in software development.
- 5-7 years of leadership experience managing a quality assurance team.
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or equivalent experience.
- QA testing-related certifications (or willingness to obtain), such as Certified Test Engineer (CSTE), Certified Software Quality Analyst (CSQA), or Certified Associate in Software Testing (CAST).
- Experience in Agile methodologies (Scrum, Kanban).
- Specialization in performance and load testing, security, automation, release management, and agile training.
- Hands-on expertise with automation tools, frameworks, and standard methodologies.
- Proven experience in test planning, test design, test and automation strategy, and test execution.
- Demonstrated experience leading test efforts for software and product development.
- Understanding of various IT platforms and experience working in cloud environments (e.g., Azure, AWS).
- Experience following development and production delivery processes.
- Self-starter with a passion for QA and independent work ethic.
Skills
- Hands-on UI and API automation experience (e.g., JMeter, Blaze Meter, Postman, Python 3.x, Pytest, Selenium, BrowserStack, MABL).
- Familiarity with Agile tools (e.g., Atlassian products: JIRA, Confluence, GIT, X-Ray).
- Knowledge of Continuous Integration tools (e.g., ADO, Jenkins, Bitbucket, Spinnaker).
- Experience with data validation and quality testing.
- Proficiency with test automation tools such as Selenium, BrowserStack, Postman, or similar.
- Proven experience developing and coding automation test scripts.
- Strong knowledge of software QA methodologies, tools, and processes.
- Experience writing clear, concise, and comprehensive test plans and test cases.
- Excellent analytical and communication skills.
- Experience preparing, presenting, and maintaining SDLC documentation and artifacts.
- Experience with performance and/or security testing (a plus).
- Experience with complex technical integrations (APIs, web services) and SaaS/PaaS cloud platforms (preferred).
- Experience with XML, JavaScript, .NET framework, T-SQL, JQuery, or JSON (a plus).
- Solid knowledge of SQL and scripting (preferred).
- Experience working in an Agile/Scrum development process (preferred).
- Familiarity with JIRA and other project management tools.
