About the role

Intertek’s Electrical business line applies more than 100 years of product testing expertise to help clients meet safety, performance, environmental and quality requirements across industries such as Medical, Lighting, Renewable Energy, HVACR, Appliances & Electronics, Hazardous Locations, Industrial Equipment, Life Safety & Security, IT & Telecom Equipment. The Senior Project Engineer–Renewable Energy & Energy Storage independently performs testing and evaluation on a variety of products to U.S., Canadian and other international product safety standards, writes reports, communicates with clients, provides local expertise in one or more product categories, and mentors less senior technical personnel. This position has the potential for up to 50% travel.

Responsibilities

  • Read and determine applicability of national codes and standards clauses for the equipment under test.
  • Read and understand electrical and mechanical schematics and manufacturing instructions.
  • Read and understand client-provided or otherwise published performance or product safety standards.
  • Validate project scope and sample applicability.
  • Identify and locate test instruments and equipment required for testing.
  • Set up and operate equipment under test; perform and document simple repairs as needed.
  • Perform certification and testing work including Batteries, Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), Combiner Boxes, On-Grid & Off-Grid Inverters, DC-DC Converters, PV Modules.
  • Conduct construction review, create evaluation reports and test plans, conduct and/or witness testing, resolve technical and/or administrative issues to power electronics standards.
  • Set up and operate standard test equipment including Temperature/Humidity Chambers; Programmable Power Supplies; PLC or other controllers; pneumatic, hydraulic, or electric actuators; AC/DC power supplies and loads; oscilloscope; multi-meter; dielectric strength tester; ground continuity tester; digital multi-meter; surge generator; over-voltage tester; environmental condition chamber; articulated probes.
  • Use hand tools to build/calibrate test fixtures.
  • Perform testing in accordance with standards; core tests may include Battery Cycling (Charge/Discharge), Temperature/Humidity soak or cycle, durability cycling, Voltage and Current measurement, dielectric, pressure, abnormal and fault condition simulation, rain, dust, corrosion.
  • Compile test results during construction review and testing; compile data and product description and type final report using established report shell; submit report to reviewer for final approval.
  • Communicate project status and test results to client, sales personnel, and management throughout testing.
  • Provide ongoing support to clients as needed.
  • Train and mentor less senior technical staff.
  • Supply information for quotes such as length of project, site needed, rental equipment, samples, and standards that will be used.
  • Follow sample handling procedures, ensuring that sample is logged in and out of the system.
  • Move equipment as needed through the facility; properly package sample for shipment.
  • Provide sales support such as attending client visits.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in electrical engineering with focus on electrical circuits and renewable energy.
  • 4+ years of directly related experience.
  • Microsoft Office software experience.
  • Adherence to safety practices and policies to ensure personal safety and the safety of others.
  • Self-motivation and ability to work independently in a fast-paced, multi-tasking environment with excellent organization and time-management skills.
  • Ability to communicate and interact effectively in verbal, written, and presentation formats.
  • Valid, unrestricted driver’s license and reliable driving record.
  • Excellent interpersonal and demonstrated communication skills, both verbally and in writing.
  • Customer-focused and quality-driven mindset.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior project management experience.
  • Direct experience in the renewable energy field and knowledge of U.S., Canadian, and other international product safety standards (ANSI, CSA, UL, EN, IEC) such as UL 9540, UL 9540A, UL 3141, UL 1973, UL 2200, UL 67, UL 891.
  • Experience with inverter standards such as UL 1741, IEEE 1547, IEC 62109.

Pay

The base wage or salary range for this position is $90,000 – $110,000. Individual compensation packages are based on factors unique to each candidate including skill set, experience, qualifications, and other job-related reasons.
