Sr. Production Underwriter

About the role

The Senior Production Underwriter is a key member of the underwriting team, reporting to the Director of Underwriting. This role focuses on profitably growing a book of business by partnering with brokers and collaborating across the organization. The position involves planning and budgeting, developing agency relationships, and executing underwriting decisions using underwriting rules, designated authority, and knowledge of insurance laws and regulations.

Responsibilities

• New and renewal underwriting execution, including selecting risks in line with BLG’s strategy and underwriting guidelines, operating within authority, and closing new business.
• Planning and budgeting for the book of business, tracking and reporting performance, and analyzing market conditions and competitive landscape.
• Providing guidance and assistance to other underwriters and functional areas.
• Monitoring production, hit ratios, renewal retention, spread of risk, and other production and quality measures.
• Staying current on state/territory issues, regulations, and trends.
• Developing trusted, lasting relationships with agent partners through visitations and regular connections.
• Tracking progress and positioning BLG within agencies, evaluating agency performance, and ensuring alignment with company and agency goals.
• Communicating corporate goals, programs, underwriting policies, procedures, and best practices to agents.
• Preparing quotes, answering questions from agencies and policyholders, and escalating issues as necessary.
• Negotiating with agents to reach positive and profitable outcomes.
• Delivering exceptional, timely, and accurate service while working with agents to craft optimal solutions for clients.
• Notifying brokers of adverse underwriting decisions, rate appeals, requirements, status, and declinations while underwriting empathetically.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent job-related experience.
• Minimum of 5 years of underwriting experience.
• Demonstrated technical underwriting expertise and product-specific knowledge (Property, Liability, Auto, and Umbrella).
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, interpersonal, communication, and negotiation skills.
• Demonstrated proficiency in sales and marketing.
• Solid knowledge of underwriting and insurance industry theories and practices.
• Ability to multi-task, prioritize competing demands, and work independently.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.

Benefits

• Base Salary Range: $100,000 - $152,000 (actual salary determined by scope, complexity, location, skills, and experience).
