About the Role

This is an advanced working and technical lead level network engineer position. Incumbents work under general direction, provide technical direction to network administrators, architect complex multi-platform LANs and WANs, define network strategy, research emerging technologies, mentor other engineers, and perform related duties.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze, install, program, and troubleshoot networking systems and related equipment; resolve technical problems and recommend system enhancements.
  • Coordinate resources to ensure timely installation, maintenance, modification, and repair of network systems and devices; administer and evaluate network systems for security and proper operation.
  • Provide technical support to network customers, assist field technicians, and offer training and work direction to personnel.
  • Perform preventive security monitoring, evaluate systems for unsafe activities, and develop solutions to mitigate risks; ensure regular backups of operating systems.
  • Communicate with personnel, vendors, customers, and outside agencies to coordinate activities and resolve issues; serve as a liaison for system installations and upgrades.
  • Develop and maintain procedural manuals, flow charts, and diagrams.
  • Design, implement, monitor, and maintain enterprise networks using LAN/WAN inter-networking technology, including network protocols and management systems.
  • Configure, install, operate, and maintain network hardware, appliances, software, and related servers.
  • Evaluate and recommend network hardware, software, and related technologies.
  • Plan, develop, coordinate, and support multiple projects; assess network architecture requirements and determine cost-effective solutions.
  • Stay current with emerging technologies and adapt to changing constraints; foster teamwork and effective communication.

Requirements

Knowledge Of

  • Current network architectures, technological developments, and industry trends.
  • Policies and objectives of assigned programs and activities.
  • Principles, practices, and methods of WAN/LAN networking, including fiber-optic and copper cable systems, data circuits, routers, switches, hubs, network operating systems, appliances, firewalls, and security.
  • A broad range of computer and networking software and hardware systems.
  • Installation, configuration, and maintenance of WAN/LAN networking and related hardware/software.
  • Computer/network systems infrastructure requirements, standards, security systems, applications, procedures, and techniques.
  • Contract documents and specifications.
  • Interpersonal skills, including tact, patience, and courtesy.
  • Oral and written communication skills.
  • Information Technology Department's strategic direction and goals.

Ability To

  • Perform analysis, installation, and troubleshooting of networking systems and related equipment.
  • Analyze and assess computer/network architecture requirements and recommend cost-effective solutions.
  • Plan, develop, coordinate, and support multiple projects.
  • Provide training, technical support, and assistance to network customers and subordinate personnel.
  • Design, develop, and implement new networks or modifications and solve network problems.
  • Stay abreast of emerging technologies and adapt to changing constraints.
  • Work effectively with diverse teams and build strong interpersonal relationships.
  • Maintain positive working relationships and communicate effectively with stakeholders.
  • Foster teamwork, advocacy, and consensus-building.
  • Maintain a safe and orderly work area.

Qualifications

A combination of education, training, and experience resulting in the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Examples include:

  • Option A: Bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related field from an accredited four-year college or university, plus four years of experience in the analysis, installation, programming, application, or troubleshooting of networking systems and related equipment.
  • Option B: Associate’s degree (60 semester units or 90 quarter units) from an accredited college or completion from a job-related, accredited vocational institution, plus six years of experience in the analysis, installation, programming, application, or troubleshooting of networking systems and related equipment.
