Sr. Metrology & Automation Engineer
About the role
Qnity’s Chemical Mechanical Planarization (CMP) business is seeking a Senior Metrology & Automation Engineer in the Manufacturing Technology group at our Newark, Delaware facility. The recent surge in AI/ML and semiconductor-fab growth has driven strong demand for CMP products used in advanced-node chips. The Newark site houses polymer and non-woven felt manufacturing, casting, impregnation, coating, and converting operations such as skiving, grooving, buffing, laminating, and finishing. This role provides technical leadership for metrology and automated equipment that characterize CMP Polymeric and Poromeric Pads, measuring properties such as hardness, compressibility, tensile strength, roughness, porosity, viscosity, molecular weight, and light transmission. Laser systems and microscopy are widely used. The Senior Metrology Engineer leads projects to upgrade existing metrologies and develop new technologies, collaborating with global R&D, Manufacturing, Product Quality, Raw Materials teams, and external vendors.
Responsibilities
- Lead cross-functional teams in scouting, designing, developing, and implementing new and improved metrologies.
- Create strategy, design, and launch metrology and equipment-automation initiatives.
- Drive new-technology qualification and change management with customers.
- Partner with stakeholders to define and execute projects with clear milestones, timelines, and resource plans.
- Interface with High-Volume Manufacturing (HVM) teams to establish best practices for metrology stability, capability, parts, spares, and maintenance cadence.
- Lead troubleshooting and root-cause investigations for metrology and system issues.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Ph.D. in Engineering, Polymer Science, Material Science, or a related field.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in Metrology, Automation, and Manufacturing Technology.
- Experience in project leadership.
Skills
- Design of complex, integrated units including fixturing and gantry systems for high-precision measurements.
- Expertise in measurement, inspection, automated systems, and process-control systems.
- Technical problem-solving for equipment and process issues.
- Planning, prioritizing, and managing multiple complex, time-sensitive projects.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills; ability to collaborate in global, cross-functional teams.
- Six Sigma project-leader certification and knowledge of SPC principles (preferred).
- Experience in analytical labs for chemical, mechanical, dimensional, and/or laser measurements.
- Proficiency in statistical software such as JMP or Minitab.
Work Environment & Physical Requirements
- Willingness to work with chemicals, polymers, and analytical/mechanical testing tools.
- Ability to work throughout a manufacturing plant with varied temperatures and humidity.
- Willingness to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Ability to work near moving mechanical parts, fume hoods, and loud equipment.
- Commitment to safety in laboratory and manufacturing environments.
