About the role
Lead the medical planning effort toward the successful completion of complex healthcare facilities. Provide overall programming, master planning, design, and medical planning. Communicate with clients and user groups to understand project requirements and represent the firm nationally as a technical expert.
Responsibilities
- Leadership
- Oversee and provide medical planning expertise to other team members and the firm-wide healthcare practice.
- Develop a comprehensive understanding of clients’ program requirements, standards, and policies to drive the overall design process.
- Assist in the development of the scope document outlining work effort and schedule during proposal development and contract discussions.
- Lead periodic project meetings and presentations; ensure the client is adequately briefed on project progress.
- Responsible for medical planning concepts and solutions in conjunction with the lead designer.
- Assist with establishing overall project milestone schedules in coordination with project managers, architects, and project engineers.
- Lead the medical planning portion of client meetings and interviews.
- Work to ensure project interdisciplinary and quality control coordination.
- Oversee the development of medical planning throughout the process to communicate planning concepts for project documentation and construction.
- Actively seek new knowledge in the design and planning of medical and healthcare facilities.
- Supervise other team members in conjunction with project managers.
- Mentor and direct the work of less experienced staff.
- Actively participate in industry associations to ensure visibility.
- Oversee and assist with the preparation of 2D and 3D presentation and design drawings.
- Promote the principles of sustainable design.
- Foster a culture of external and internal client service.
- Teamwork
- Participate in user groups (heads of departments, specialists, etc.) to collect program data and develop planning layouts for healthcare facilities.
- Provide expert technical knowledge in the design and planning of various-sized medical and healthcare facilities.
- Prepare and modify architectural documents related to medical planning and equipment placement.
- Anticipate and develop solutions to design and planning issues as the project progresses.
- Participate throughout the design process to lead the design and planning teams toward optimal solutions.
- Actively participate in the firm-wide Healthcare practice within HOK.
- Assist in the development of standard materials that describe the portfolio, systems, processes, and people of the Healthcare Group.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in architecture or equivalent in education or experience required; healthcare design certification preferred.
- Master’s degree preferred.
- 15 years’ experience focused on a variety of healthcare projects—full new facilities, additions, renovations, departments—with some large-scale, complex healthcare projects required.
- Architecture license preferred.
- LEED accreditation or Green Associate preferred.

Pay
The reasonably expected salary range for this position is $140,000 to $160,000. Other compensation may include a discretionary bonus.
