Sr. Manufacturing Engineer, Material Flow

Tesla · Austin, TX · Yesterday
On-siteEngineeringFull-time

What You'll Do

  • Lead the mechanical design, development, commissioning, and ramp of Autonomous Guided Vehicles (AGVs) and Autonomous Mobile Robots (AMRs), including custom material transport platforms, companion carts, docking stations, and associated material handling infrastructure
  • Own the end-to-end conveyance design and integration for large-scale manufacturing expansion projects, including mass flow conveyance systems, accumulator tie-ins, single-line puck conveyance, inclines/declines, and buffer spiral systems
  • Develop and validate mechanical designs for AGV/AMR platforms — including chassis, payload interfaces, docking mechanisms, and guidance systems — using 3D CAD tools; create and maintain layouts, tooling drawings, pneumatic schematics, and electrical schematics
  • Write, debug, and optimize controls programs for AGV/AMR systems and conveyance equipment, including PLC logic, HMI configuration, network setup, and motion control programming; perform backup and restoration of control system configurations
  • Serve as the subject matter expert and equipment owner for AGV/AMR systems, driving reliability, availability, and continuous improvement through structured root cause analysis and data-driven decision making
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with Material Flow Engineering, Controls, Electrical Engineering, Operations, and EHS teams to ensure safe, efficient, and high-quality production line performance
  • Debug and optimize automated material handling processes to reduce cycle times and maximize OEE; troubleshoot and recover processes using PLC, HMI, and fleet management software
  • Provide hands-on support to maintenance teams during extended downtime situations; build and maintain training materials, maintenance routines, PM schedules, and lifecycle documentation for AGV/AMR and conveyance systems
  • Lead safety and ergonomic improvements to AGV/AMR and conveyance equipment, ensuring compliance with applicable regulations and internal standards
  • Identify and manage critical spare parts for AGV/AMR and conveyance systems to prevent extended downtime
  • Participating in supplier and internal Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT) and Site Acceptance Tests (SAT) for AGV/AMR platforms and conveyance equipment. Develop and manage FMEAs and risk assessments to prioritize equipment improvement projects and ensure robust repair strategies are in place

What You'll Bring

  • Degree or Equivalent Experience in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Robotics, or a related engineering discipline
  • 8+ years of relevant experience in a high-volume manufacturing or automated material handling environment
  • Hands-on mechanical design experience with AGV/AMR systems, including chassis design, payload interfaces, guidance systems, docking mechanisms, and fleet-level integration
  • Demonstrated experience designing and commissioning industrial conveyance systems — including mass flow conveyors, single-line puck conveyors, accumulation systems, spirals, inclines/declines, and diverters/mergers
  • Proficiency in controls programming for AGV/AMR and conveyance systems, including PLC programming, HMI development, network configuration, and motion control. 3D CAD design experience (SolidWorks, CATIA, or equivalent) for production equipment, high-volume part handling, and conveyance systems — including layout creation, tooling drawings, and pneumatic/electrical schematics
  • Demonstrated ability to ramp automated material handling equipment into high-volume manufacturing — including AGVs/AMRs, conveyors, electromechanical systems, and robotic platforms
  • Proven track record of solving complex electromechanical and software system issues with limited documentation; ability to build process know-how and drive improvement projects independently
  • Experience with fleet management software for AGV/AMR systems. Experience with mass flow conveyor technology (magnetic, gap, or belt-based) in a cleanroom or controlled manufacturing environment. Motion control programming experience, including backup and restoration
  • Knowledge of battery cell manufacturing technology and processes
  • Familiarity with large-scale conveyance expansion projects in a high-volume manufacturing setting
