Sr Manager Safety & Industrial Health

Shift: 8-hour days, 5 days per week (autonomous schedule to maximize field engagement; periodic flex schedule and 24/7 on-call status for serious incidents).

About the Role

The Sr Manager Safety & Industrial Health drives effective field safety performance through visible leadership, oversight of safety professionals, and strong partnership with operations. This role sets and reinforces clear safety expectations, fosters a strong “stop work and speak up” culture, and ensures consistent application of safety systems and risk controls. The position supports operational leaders by enabling hazard identification, risk management, and performance insight while coordinating incident response and learning to reduce serious injury risk. Safety is integrated into daily work execution and continuous improvement across the organization, aligning with Tampa Electric Company’s belief that safety of life shall outweigh all other considerations.

Responsibilities

• Operational Partnership (20%)
  • Serve as a resource to operational team members for hazard identification, risk assessment, and control implementation.
  • Facilitate implementation of safety requirements, including the Safety Management System and Safe Work Practices, to ensure compliance with federal (OSHA), state, local, and industry best practices.
  • Deliver initiatives to strengthen hazard identification and controls, reduce serious injury and fatality (SIF) potential, and enhance field safety outcomes.
  • Implement field-based safety support activities, including continuous observation and feedback of active tasks, attendance at safety meetings, and participation with safety committees.
• Incident Management & Learning (20%)
  • Coordinate incident response and investigations at the business unit level by managing safety’s onsite incident response, ensuring timely reporting of incidents (personal injuries, near misses, and controllable accidents), facilitating investigation teams, and tracking corrective actions.
  • Ensure timely and effective communication of lessons learned across business units to prevent recurrence.
• Strategy and Governance (15%)
  • Ensure consistent interpretation and optimized implementation of corporate safety requirements, SMS workplans, Safe Work Practices, and standards.
  • Support and collaborate with business unit leaders to integrate safety into business planning, decision-making, and daily execution.
  • Monitor performance metrics, dashboards, and leading/lagging indicators to assess effectiveness and identify trends.
• Leadership and Oversight (15%)
  • Provide leadership, direction, and performance oversight to safety professionals and others within the safety organization. Demonstrate sincere personal concern, inspiring a "nobody gets hurt" mindset.
  • Develop safety leaders by strengthening technical capability, leadership presence, and influence.
  • Ensure visible presence through active field engagement, personal interaction, continuous feedback, recognition of safe performance, and leading by example.
• Risk & Contractor Safety (15%)
  • Ensure consistent implementation and effectiveness of the Risk Management Program.
  • Monitor contractor safety performance, ensuring alignment with TEC Contractor Safety Management Program requirements and regulatory expectations.
  • Assess effectiveness of risk and contractor safety programs; partner with supply chain and operations to address gaps.
  • Support escalation and resolution of significant contractor safety issues.
• Culture, Training & Engagement (15%)
  • Promote a strong “stop work and speak up” culture and reinforce expectations for safe behaviors.
  • Champion visible safety leadership and model expected behaviors across all levels of the organization.
  • Support safety training content development.
  • Recognize and promote strong safety leadership, innovation, and positive field safety performance.

Supervision

• Direct Supervision: Team of Safety professionals within the assigned business units.
• Indirect Supervision: Indirect oversight of team members and contractors in safety-related aspects of their jobs. Empowered to stop any unsafe work activity by TEC team members or contractors that does not meet TEC Safe Work Practices, OSHA Regulations, or other company procedures.

Relationships

• Key Internal: Programmatic Safety and Analytics Team, BU Leadership, Safety Leaders, Supervisors and Crews, Legal, Claims and Litigation Team, Engineering & Asset Management, Procurement, Training.
• Key External: Prime Contractors, Subcontractors, Vendors, Service Providers, Emergency Response Partners.

Qualifications

• Education:
  • Required: Bachelor’s Degree in a related field.
  • Preferred: Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in a related field.
  • In lieu of a Bachelor’s degree, an additional 4 years of experience may be considered.
• Licenses/Certifications:
  • Required: Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or safety certification/certificate, as determined with direct performance coach, must be obtained within one year.
• Experience:
  • Required: 8 years of related electric utility operations or safety experience.
  • Required: 3 years of leadership experience.
  • Preferred: Leadership in utility safety (demonstrated ability to lead people or projects).

Skills

• Strong knowledge of field-based safety systems, serious injury and fatality (SIF) prevention, risk management principles, and applicable Safe Work Practices (a strong understanding of OSHA, state, local, and industry regulatory requirements may substitute).
• Demonstrated leadership and people-management skills to provide direction, coaching, and performance oversight to safety professionals while modeling visible safety leadership and reinforcing a “stop work and speak up” culture.
• Ability to partner effectively with operations to integrate safety into daily work execution, support hazard identification and risk control implementation, and use performance metrics and leading/lagging indicators to identify trends and drive improvement.
• Strong communication, collaboration, and professional judgment to influence across the organization, balance operational demands with safety expectations, and uphold the principle that safety shall outweigh all other considerations.
• Preferred: Proven capability in coordinating incident response, investigations, corrective actions, and organizational learning; experience overseeing contractor safety performance and risk management program effectiveness.

Working Conditions

• Must be able to periodically work a flexible schedule and maintain an “on-call” status (24/7) for serious mishaps, accidents, or emergencies in all types of weather conditions.
• May be required to travel inside and outside of the assigned service area.
• Ability and willingness to report to any TEC location.
• Responding to storms is a condition of employment. Team members are required to participate in response/recovery activities to maintain service during emergencies/disasters, including working in normal job duties or other assigned activities.
