About the Role
Our client is seeking a Sr. Manager – Application Development (Workday) to lead multiple engineering teams supporting Workday and HR/Finance applications. This role will drive application development, modernization, cloud adoption, Agile delivery, DevSecOps, and CI/CD while ensuring security, scalability, and reliability.
The ideal candidate is a strong technical engineering leader with experience managing Agile/Scrum teams, AWS applications, legacy modernization, and enterprise software delivery, preferably within a regulated financial services environment. The role also focuses on stakeholder collaboration, talent development, and continuous engineering improvement.
Responsibilities
- Lead the HR and Finance application portfolio, including Workday, SaaS platforms, custom applications, integrations, workflows, and reporting.
- Drive secure, scalable, reliable technology solutions aligned with business goals while partnering with HR, Finance, and IT stakeholders.
- Build and develop high-performing engineering teams while ensuring operational, audit, security, and compliance readiness.
- Strengthen Agile delivery and modern engineering practices, including DevSecOps, quality, delivery metrics, and continuous improvement.
Technology Leadership & Engineering Excellence
- Lead technology strategy for the HR & Finance application portfolio, including Workday, SaaS, custom applications, integrations, reporting, and workflows.
- Oversee the end-to-end SDLC, including architecture, development, testing, deployment, and production support.
- Lead engineering teams to deliver secure, scalable, reliable, and maintainable applications aligned with enterprise standards.
- Partner with business leaders to develop application roadmaps, balancing business priorities, modernization, technical debt, risk, and capacity.
- Drive modern engineering practices including API-first architecture, microservices, automated testing, secure coding, code reviews, and CI/CD.
- Act as the technical escalation point for architecture, production, integration, security, performance, and modernization challenges.
Cloud, AWS & DevSecOps Delivery
- Lead teams designing, deploying, and operating secure, reliable, scalable AWS applications with a focus on automation, performance, and cost efficiency.
- Drive cloud-native development using IaC, containers, managed services, CI/CD pipelines, and application telemetry.
- Champion DevSecOps by embedding security, testing, quality, governance, and compliance throughout the SDLC.
- Ensure robust monitoring, logging, alerting, and operational support to improve reliability and reduce incident resolution time.
Agile Scrum Delivery Leadership
- Own and continuously improve the Bank’s Agile framework, standards, processes, coaching model, and Azure DevOps tooling.
- Lead Scrum and Kanban practices, driving effective backlog management, sprint/flow discipline, story quality, dependency management, and measurable delivery outcomes.
- Lead enterprise delivery resources, including Scrum Masters and Business Systems Analysts, supporting requirements, work decomposition, backlog refinement, and delivery execution.
- Partner with business and technology leaders to prioritize work, manage dependencies, remove impediments, and deliver business value.
- Use Agile, engineering, and operational metrics to improve team health, predictability, throughput, cycle time, quality, and continuous improvement.
Business Partnership & Stakeholder Management
- Serve as a strategic technology partner to HR, Finance, and business leaders, aligning technology roadmaps and delivery with business objectives.
- Translate business needs into technology solutions, delivery plans, and clear recommendations while managing risks, tradeoffs, and expectations.
- Communicate effectively with technical and executive stakeholders, vendors, and risk/compliance teams.
Talent Development & High-Performing Teams
- Hire, develop, coach, and retain Agile and engineering talent across software development, DevOps, QA, BSA, Scrum Master, and application support functions.
- Build a high-performance culture focused on accountability, collaboration, continuous learning, inclusion, quality, and business value.
- Establish performance expectations, career development, succession planning, and skills growth aligned with modern cloud-based development.
Risk, Security, Compliance & Operations
- Ensure applications and engineering practices meet financial services security, compliance, audit, regulatory, and operational requirements.
- Partner with Cybersecurity, Risk, Compliance, Audit, and Infrastructure teams to embed appropriate controls throughout the SDLC.
- Promote secure coding, automated testing, vulnerability remediation, change control, segregation of duties, observability, and audit readiness.
Strategy, Planning & Financial Management
- Support application portfolio strategy, technology roadmaps, budgeting, staffing, and resource allocation.
- Drive modernization initiatives including digital transformation, application rationalization, API integration, resiliency, data integration, and legacy transformation.
- Manage vendor relationships and track delivery, capacity, financial, operational, and modernization outcomes to support leadership decisions.
Requirements
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, or a related technical discipline; equivalent experience may be considered.
- 15+ years of software engineering/application development experience and 5+ years managing engineering teams.
- Enterprise experience with Workday HR/Finance, SaaS, integrations, workflows, and reporting.
- Strong AWS, Agile/Scrum, DevSecOps, CI/CD, and cloud-native architecture experience.
- Technical knowledge of Angular, Java, .NET/.NET Core, APIs, microservices, and automated testing.
- Proven leadership in application modernization, cloud migration, and digital transformation.
- Strong stakeholder management, talent development, and team-building skills.
- Experience in a regulated/financial services environment preferred.
Pay
$120,000 - $180,000 (based on experience) + Benefits.
