Sr. Laboratory Assistant, Clinical Laboratory (Per Diem, Day Shift)

About the Role
Collects and distributes specimens in an inpatient setting. Supports the laboratory including specimen ordering, processing, and preparation for testing. Monitors specimens for send-out to reference laboratories. Facilitates billing of lab charges, reports distribution, and coordinates outside clinical training. Acts as a resource for other staff members. Performs a variety of technical and administrative tasks in the laboratory.
Responsibilities
- Interacts with the Laboratory Information System for data entry, report recovery, and report distribution in an inpatient setting.
- Enters billing information into the Hospital Information System and processes laboratory orders for billing.
- Prepares laboratory reports and distributes them to the ordering individual.
- Collects, processes, and preserves specimens in inpatient settings.
- Performs clerical duties to process and report test results, prioritizing based on order status (STAT, ASAP, routine).
- Communicates effectively with other departments and staff, including physicians and their offices, to facilitate workflow and quality.
- Processes and maintains records of specimens sent to reference labs.
- Assists in inventory management, including ordering and stocking supplies.
- Performs billing duties, which may include running reports and responding to biller requests.
- Completes microbiology pre-analytical procedures and documentation for laboratory testing according to laboratory policies, including quality control standards, calibrations, and documentation.
- Documents quality control, calibration, and test results.
- Assists Clinical Lab Scientists with the operation of instrumentation.
- Consults with a clinical laboratory scientist or phlebotomy supervisor when difficulties are encountered in phlebotomy, test selection, or specimen processing.
- Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
Requirements
- High School Education/GED or equivalent: Required in CA; Preferred in OR and HI.
- Associate’s/Technical Degree or equivalent combination of education/related experience: Preferred.
- One year of Laboratory Assistant experience: Preferred.
Qualifications
- Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) license: Required in CA; Preferred in OR and HI.
- Phlebotomy Tech (CPT) or Certified Phlebotomy Technician II (CPTII): Required.
Pay
The estimated base pay for this position is $25.00 to $31.84 per hour. Additional individual compensation may be available through differentials, extra shift incentives, bonuses, etc. Base pay is only a portion of the total rewards package, and a comprehensive benefits program is available for qualifying positions.
