SR Instrumentation Technician, ONSITE, Fremont CA

About the role

As a Senior Instrumentation Technician at Boehringer Ingelheim, you will provide technical support, coordinate work activities, and ensure customer service needs are met within a collaborative team environment. This role involves troubleshooting site automation technologies, resolving issues, improving operations, performing calibrations, and assisting in developing new processes and procedures.

Responsibilities

• Performs calibrations of inspection, measurement, and test equipment (process control and automation instrumentation) according to detailed calibration work instructions, including unique and highly complex instrumentation.
• Records results in the Enterprise Asset Management System.
• Identifies out-of-tolerance conditions and performs corrective actions via adjustments, component replacement, or correction factors.
• Maintains equipment by troubleshooting to ensure reliable performance, including adjusting, repairing, and replacing components (sensors, cables, connectors, control boards).
• Performs independent analysis of communications and configuration of systems and controllers.
• Handles preventive, corrective, or emergency work orders and responds to service calls during plant operations, including off-shift periods and weekends.
• Assists in reviewing PLC or HMI program logic during certifications or troubleshooting.
• Develops or updates machine logic and executes test protocols independently or under Engineering direction.
• Maintains accurate and complete documentation in compliance with policies, procedures, and regulatory guidelines.
• Documents activities to support maintenance best practices and continuous improvement.
• Reviews and analyzes measurement data to ensure proper documentation and adherence to procedures.
• Identifies abnormalities, trends, or potential future issues based on data.
• Leads the development of calibration, certification, or maintenance-related procedures and reviews/approves calibration data sheets.
• Reviews updated or modified calibration procedures developed by other technicians or contractors.
• Maintains primary, secondary, and/or working calibration standards.
• Reviews calibration data sheets for departmental standards to ensure compliance with manufacturer tolerances.
• Executes test protocols developed by Reliability or Engineers to support qualification of new and existing equipment.

Requirements

• High School Diploma (or equivalent) required.
• Minimum of five (5) years’ experience in instrumentation, measurement, control, and/or troubleshooting.
• Demonstrated understanding of calibration methodology, loop-checking, advanced maintenance and repair of instrumentation, automation, and process control systems.
• Working knowledge of schematics, P&ID drawings, and ISA symbols & numbering.
• Strong electrical, mechanical, and technical aptitude.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a detail-oriented approach.
• Ability to work independently or within a team environment.
• Proficiency in maintaining accurate records and applying Work Instructions, SOPs, and regulatory requirements.
• High level of personal motivation, initiative, and adaptability to changing work assignments.
• Ability to make decisions within the scope of operating policies and procedures.

Eligibility Requirements: Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without restriction. Must be willing to take a drug test and post-offer physical (if required). Must be 18 years of age or older.

Skills

• Consults with Engineers, Reliability, vendors, or project managers on results and feedback, including support for Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) or Site Acceptance Testing (SAT) and related travel.
• Works independently or collaboratively on projects and improvement initiatives to ensure equipment meets site standards.
• Reviews project designs and makes recommendations for automation, measurement equipment, or calibration standards.
• Prepares, reviews, and tests calibration and configuration reports to ensure proper documentation in the Enterprise Asset Management System (EAM).
• Supports the development of training materials and provides training for other technicians or contractors.
• Reviews and provides final approval (closing) on technician work orders.
• Develops or guides the development of metrics for root cause analysis (RCA) meetings.
• Actively participates in RCA meetings to resolve calibration and equipment issues.
