About the Role

The Senior Instrumentation Engineer leads the design, development, and execution of field instrumentation and control systems for offshore oil & gas facilities. This role provides technical expertise across all project phases, including specification development, equipment selection, and vendor evaluation to ensure compliance with project requirements and industry standards. The engineer acts as a key technical interface with clients, suppliers, and multidisciplinary teams while ensuring the quality and integrity of all instrumentation deliverables. The position also supports project planning efforts such as cost estimating and scope definition and drives innovative, reliable instrumentation solutions from concept through implementation.

Responsibilities

• Designs and develops field instrumentation and control systems for offshore oil & gas facilities.
• Prepares instrument equipment specifications, data sheets, purchase requisitions, and bid evaluations for field instruments, control valves, flow meters, PLCs, SCADA systems, safety systems, F&G panels, and condition monitoring systems.
• Conducts technical evaluations, assesses equipment/material suitability, issues bid clarifications, and completes technical reports to support order placements.
• Leads technical discussions and meetings with suppliers and clients.
• Prepares instrument specifications, calculations, and bills of material.
• Collaborates with instrument engineers, automation engineers, technologists, and designers to deliver instrument engineering and design outputs for various projects.
• Develops instrument index, cause and effect charts, instrument location plans, installation details, junction box details, wiring diagrams, loop drawings, I/O panel schedules, and ladder diagrams as required.
• Creates designs requiring innovation and ingenuity.
• Reviews vendor documents.
• Ensures quality control of all deliverables within the instrument discipline.
• Interfaces with project management, clients, and other project disciplines.
• Assists in preparing cost estimates and defining scopes of work for instrument systems.
• Mentors and provides technical guidance to junior and mid-level engineers.

Requirements

• BSc, MSc, or equivalent in Electrical or Chemical Engineering.
• 10+ years of experience in the engineering and design of offshore oil & gas or energy facilities involving field instrumentation, control systems, and related equipment.
• NCEES P.E. License preferred.
• Strong interpersonal skills and excellent verbal/written communication abilities.

Skills

• Advanced Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
• Experience with SPI (Intools) is a plus.
• Experience with Microsoft Project preferred.
• Experience with control valve and flow element sizing programs.

Working Conditions

• Primarily office-based with occasional travel to off-site locations, including plants or facilities.
• Field duties may require outdoor work in varying temperatures and noise levels.
• May require working in plant or shop areas around production machinery.
• Possible multiple job sites in a day with exposure to climate changes.
• Periodic out-of-town travel may be required.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to lift and carry up to ten (10) pounds.

• Ability to sit for extended periods.
• Sufficient visual acuity for document review, analysis, and investigations.
• Manual dexterity for routine office tasks such as typing and using standard equipment.
